The Theater Department at P.S. 506 School of Journalism and Technology is dedicated to creating an open learning space for students to explore dramatic tools that lead to: original student–driven works, serve as an introduction to theater history, theater literacy, and focus on developing self-esteem and confidence. The curriculum is fully aligned with the New York City Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts (Theater). Our lessons are also geared toward the Common Core Learning Standards in reading and writing.
Monthly assemblies are organized for all students to have the opportunity to develop their love of the arts and to discover their love of performing. The assemblies are completely run by a technical crew made up of students. The theater department also runs a morning enrichment club where students put on full-length play for the school and community.
At P.S. 506, students are encouraged to explore all aspects of theater, from backstage to onstage. Our program wants all students to be enriched by the arts in a way that is long lasting through school into adulthood.
