The Science Program at P.S. 506

The Science Program at P.S. 506, is designed to meet the N.Y.S. and N.Y.C. Elementary Science Performance Standards. The goals of our program are to develop and improve students’ inquiry and processing skills using the  "hands-on discovery approach" and interactive SmartBoard activities to present the content area.

The children work cooperatively in groups, with partners.  It is an effective, fun-filled way to learn science concepts from kindergarten through fifth grade. The students improve their ability to classify, communicate, compare and contrast, create models, gather, and organize data.

As teachers, we model how scientists think and work by formulating questions, designing experiments and conducting tests. Thus, our students practice how to make predictions, measure, manipulate materials safely, make decisions, draw conclusions, and formulate their own questions for investigation.

Assessment includes: teacher observation and questioning during activities; student written responses (“note booking”);quizzes; and unit tests. In the fourth grade, students take the N.Y.S. Elementary Science Examination that is administered in the Spring.

Overall, we aspire to make science an interesting and fun learning experience for our students.
