The Computer Technology Program at P.S. 506
The Computer Technology Enrichment Program at P.S. 506, is geared to immerse our students with the best technological-based learning opportunities in order to help them develop an elementary competency level of technology literacy. Our i-book computer technology program takes place within two venues: the wireless school computer lab which is equipped with a teacher presentation SmartBoard/computer set-up and a class set of mac i-books installed with programs as Kidspiration3, Pixie 2, PrintShop, the Microsoft Suite, i-Work, i-Life Programs. Also, the lab has peripheral devices as printers, a document camera, digital cameras, and video cameras; and the mobile carts are equipped with MacBooks which are used to bring the use of hands-on technology directly into the classroom setting.
Specifically, the program has been developed to integrate technology within the content area of Social Studies in order to enrich students’ understanding of the subject matter. Students of all grades are provided with weekly formal computer technology instruction to develop and apply the tools of the 21st Century learner. Themed-based lessons are implemented as SmartBoard interactive Notebook presentations and are developed in alignment with the National Technology Standards, NYS Social Studies Standards, the Common Core Literacy Standards, & also address the facilitation of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Higher-Order Questioning. During each technology lesson, students learn how to utilize the latest hardware and software geared for the elementary setting in order to complete assigned scaffolded tasks within theme based-project assignments, aligned with Webb’s Depth of Knowledge Domains. Ultimately, leading to students’ development of strategic thinking, reasoning and extended thinking, as they construct knowledge to develop presentations and processes by:
- Using digital media to communicate and work independently or collaboratively with others students
- Using digital tools to gather, evaluate, anduse information
- Applying critical thinking skills to conduct research, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources
- Understanding human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior
- Demonstrating a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations
Technology is also integrated throughout the building in all classrooms, the library and teacher resource center. All rooms are equipped with a teacher presentation station which is comprised of a SmartBoard/i-Mac computer set-up with access to the internet and networked printers. Teachers create and present interactive multimedia lessons using the Notebook software and access website resources related to all subject areas for instruction and learning activities. Also, Literacy instruction is presented to students on the web in an e-textbook format for grades K to 5 and Social Studies instruction is presented in an e-textbook format for grades 4 to 5. In addition, situated in the library is the student learning i-Mac computer center, where different groups of students participate in web-based instructional and skills assessment activities throughout the day. To continue to reinforce and enrich the teaching and learning that takes place in the classroom setting, this year we have renewed our school/home subscription of the interactive enrichment website BrainPOP, Jr and BrainPOP, as well as, the sites, KID BIZ 3000 Literacy web-based assessment program, and Reading A to Z leveled books' site for school use. We have also added many more excellent sites to the Porta Portal link of our school website which is available for parents, students and teachers to access many reviewed educational resources.
Overall, at PS 506, the Magnet School of Global Communication through Journalism & Technology, our mission is to provide students with the opportunity to learn the relevance and the application of computer technology as an essential tool. Thus, as it is integrated into school day learning activities for instruction, enrichment, remediation, assessment, and reinforcement, students acquire the pragmatic technological knowledge and skills needed to meet the standards and expectations set forth for students of the 21st Century global community.
