We welcome back members of our wonderful educational community to P.S. 506 for the 2012-2013 school year. There are many activities planned each month and we will share them with a summary. Leader in Me Assembly
P.S. 506 kicked-off the new school year with the Welcome Back Assembly on Friday, September 14th. The assembly addressed leadership and being proactive with a video, student speeches and songs. Students learned about the Leader in Me's 7 Habits with the help of class 5-310, who spoke about what the habits meant to them and what leadership is all about. Class 1-203 sang a song about being proactive, giving advice such as "be proactive, stop & think!" Students from class 3-303 wrote and recited what it means to "fill a bucket" after reading Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids" by Carol McCloud. The show concluded with the introduction to P.S. 506's original Leadership Song, which was sung by class 3-305 and created by the Drama/Chorus teacher, Ms. Rosenberg.

October Annual Halloween Painting Contest
District 20 Community Council
Students from the fourth and fifth grade who submitted their original Halloween drawings were then selected according to the specific guidelines of the Annual Halloween Painting Contest.
On October 23rd, students spent a wonderful day with our P.S. 506 Art teacher, Mrs. M. Schiano and parent volunteers. Our talented students, recreated their drawings with tempera paints on the storefront windows of the Key Food Store on 69th street between Ridge Boulevard & Third avenue.

Annual Penny Harvest "Kick-Off" Assembly
Our Penny Harvest leaders, Mr. M. Scheer & Ms. J. Schneider started the school" kick-off" for the annual Penny Harvest Drive on October 26th. Students learned about the importance of the program and the goals of our fundraising mission for this year which is to collect 35 bags of pennies. Also, they were introduced to the Penny Harvest Committee. These students have shown true leadership qualities by volunteering their time and sharing their ideas to help others.

November
Autumn Harvest Parade
Our PTA hosted a Harvest Parade for all students in grades Pre-K to 2 on November 9th. Students had a choice to dress- up as a storybook character, community helper, someone they admire, or someone they would like to be when they grow up. In the school auditorium, classes followed a procession to the beat of fun music.Many thanks to the PTA for providing all students of grades Pre-K to 5 with goody bags and to the parents and friends who came to see our students during the Autumn Harvest Parade!
Fall Assembly
The October and November assembly were combined to create a Fall Assembly. It began with a Halloween Safety video that our School Chorus students created to show their creativity and talents. After students in 2-201 , 1-203 , 2-214, & 2-212 , performed, both Halloween & Thanksgiving poems. Class 5-301 & 5-312 sang and danced original dance steps to Thriller. The P.S. 506 School Chorus presented the original & inspirational Leader in Me - themed P.S. 506 school song to our teachers and students! Many thanks to our Drama teacher Ms. H. Rosenberg, our Creative Dance teacher Ms. L. Nicastro, our School Chorus, classroom teachers, & students who performed at the assembly!
"Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund" Donation Assemblies for School Sponsorship of Bay Ridge Cares Kitchen & the Tunnel to Towers Foundation
Many Thanks to our Principal Mrs. L. Sarnicola for "leading" the P.S. 506 educational community & working with the P.T.A. in our fundraising mission to support foundations that help families affected by Hurricane Sandy. Our school educational community's donations totaled $3, 596.85!!
On Thursday, December 6, 2012, the members of "Bay Ridge Cares Kitchen" were invited to our school for a special assembly. Ms. Karen Tadroos & Mr. Justin Brannan were presented by Mrs. L. Sarnicola & the P.T.A. Executive Committee the donation check of $ 2, 096.00.
Also, on Friday, December 11, 2012, the representative of the "Stephen Siller-Tunnel to Towers" Foundation was invited to our school for a special assembly, as well. Fire Battalion Chief J. Oehm was presented by Mrs. L. Sarnicola & the P.T.A. Executive Committee the donation check of $1, 500.85.
At the assemblies, our guests were entertained by the enthusiastic and talented P.S. 506 Student Council Committee, Violinists and the Chorus to express P.S. 506's school-wide appreciation. In turn, they were appreciative and amazed by our school community's generosity and P.S. 506's wonderful students.
In the spirit of leadership & helping others, our P.S. 506 educational community is so proud to sponsor these foundations which have dedicated volunteers to bring meals, supplies & labor skills to help families who have been impacted by the destruction of Hurricane Sandy. We are sure our donated funds will help bring holiday cheer to many families who have lost their homes & belongings!.

2012 Annual Lutheran Medical Center Holiday Celebration
At P.S. 506, our Principal Mrs. L. Sarnicola & school educational community are committed to the Sunset Park partnership with Lutheran Medical Center.
On Thursday, December 13, 2012, our violin director, Mrs. Sophia Chertok & P.S. 506 student violinists, once again spread holiday cheer for hospital staff, visitors & patients by performing at the Annual Lutheran Medical Center Holiday Celebration. Students played classical and holiday musical compositions, delighting all who attended with their musical talents, performance skills and enthusiasm!!
2012 Annual Holiday Celebration for Military Families of the
Fort Hamilton Army Base
On Tuesday, December 18, 2012, seven military families from the Fort Hamilton Army Base were invited to the annual Holiday Celebration in honor of their commitment & sacrifice for our Country. Each year, our Journalism teacher, Mrs. M. Schiano, the Ft. Hamilton Army Base school liaison, coordinates the special assembly in order for our students to meet the soldiers, to thank them for their military service and to present them with special student holiday letters. As a wonderful surprise, children of soldiers were presented with holiday presents from our educational school community. Also, the military families were entertained with well-known and much loved holiday songs and music by our school chorus, directed by Ms. H. Rosenberg and our school violinists, directed by Mrs. S. Chertok.
Winter Assembly
Our Winter Holiday Celebration was a magical show which was presented within a spectacular winter scene backdrop. The assembly, showcased our students' performing arts talents and enthusiasm as they performed with their winter costumes. This year, our Violin, Drama, Dance, & Band programs performed separately, together and also accompanied the performances of various classes.
The musical performances were: School Band, My Country 'Tis of Thee, Grade 2 Violinists played Perpetual Motion and Allegro by Suzuki, Grade 3, 4, & 5 Violinists played Interlude by Suzuki & Tambourine by Rameau, the Chorus sang Winter Wonderland & Silver Bells & Jingle Bell Rock with the musical accompaniment of the Grade 5 Violinists, Class 2-210 sang Let is Snow with the musical accompaniment of Grade 5 Violinists, Class 1-203 performed the Chanukah song and Kwanza song. Our Dancers from class 1-205, 1-206, 1-207, & Dance Club members, performed original choreography to music from the Nutcracker by P. Tchaikovsky as the Mice Dance, Dance of the Snowflakes, Dance of the Candy Canes, & from Swan Lake, the Hungarian Neapolitan Dance, Folk dance, & Carol of the Bells.
As a wonderful surprise, students and teachers were amazed when Frosty the Snowman "came to life " as Class 2-216 sang Frosty the Snowman to the musical accompaniment from the Violinists. During the Grand Finale, everyone participated in the sing along songs of Feliz Navidad, Jingle Bells & We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

January
The assembly for January celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, jr. Classes 2-210 and 2-307 sang My Country Tis of Thee. Our school chorus then recited Dr. King's famous speech, "I have a Dream." Students shared a video on ways to be a Leader in our school community. Class 5-306 did a wonderful job sharing facts about Dr. King's life, his ideas and actions that helped to being positive change in our society.
February
February's assembly celebrated the Chinese New Year. Classes K-101 and K-219 sang See the Dragon Dance & Prance, while 5-306 danced through the aisles dressed as the Chinese Dragon. Class 1-203 sang a song that wished everyone a Happy New Year in Chinese.
To kick off Respect for All Week, class 5-322 spoke about what respect meant to them and sang, Let's Get Along on this Wonderful Day, a song about showing respect in school, at home and in their community. Class 1-203 sang Peacemakers and Hands are for Loving, Not Pushing and Shoving, Class 4-315 sang a special song, Spread a Little Aloha, Around the World. The Chorus sang a new song called, Happiness. Last, the Dance Club gave their debut of the PS 506 dance that accompanies the chorus' PS 506 song.
We are very proud of everyone who performed and thankful for all the teachers and paraprofessionals that helped!
March
On March 15, our fifth grade contestants participated in the annual school Pi-Athlon. Our school audience of fifth graders & their teachers were invited to watch the fifth grade finalists who participated in the competition. Students all prepared by memorizing the numbers of PI; It is an infinite irrational number that is used to describe a perfect circle. Student contestants all showed great skills of concentration, memorization and recitation during the competition. We congratulate our PI-Athlon contestants for taking part in a “great challenge” showing leadership & P.S. 506 school spirit!!

First Annual Talent Show
On March 22, P.S. 506 held the first Annual Talent Show. Students who wanted to perform in front of our school educational community had the opportunity to express their interests, talent and creativity. With the assistance of our Drama Teacher, Ms. H. Rosenberg & Dance Teacher, Ms. L. Nicastro, students spent many hours practicing their performances (singing, dancing, playing instruments, & acting, etc.) in order to present an amazing P.S. 506 Talent Show!!

P.S. 506 First Annual Leadership Day
On May 6, our school held the First Annual P.S. 506 Leadership Day. Parents, guardians and friends were invited to learn how and why the Leader in Me Program has been adopted at P.S. 506. Also, why it is important for the school-home connection to reinforce the Leadership Habits for students' success with the program's goals.
On P.S. 506 day, the morning event was planned with an informations session for parents, student led tours, classroom visits, family activities, performances, and student speeches in the auditorium.
It was a wonderful and successful event. Thank you for your continued support of our school-wide Leadership Initiatives!!
