Athletics & Fitness

The mission of the Public Schools Athletic League is to provide opportunities for educating students in physical fitness, character development and socialization skills through an athletic program that fosters teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship.
The goal of the C.H.A.M.P.S. Middle School Sports & Fitness program is to improve student fitness levels and overall health by increasing opportunities for children to engage in physical activity, regardless of athletic ability. The program promotes health-related fitness through a mix of several after-school and before-school activities including traditional sports, non-traditional sports, and fitness activities. The ultimate goal is for students to grow to be C.H.A.M.P.S. — Cooperative, Healthy, Active, Motivated, Positive Students — for life.
The Physical education program is based on the Physical Best curriculum. Physical Best is a comprehensive health-related fitness education program.  The program provides concepts and activities that help the teacher assist the students in achieving their individual physical best in relation to health-related fitness.  Sports skills are also taught as elements of the physical education program but not over-emphasized as to their impotance.

The program also includes the Fitnessgram.  This is a health-related fitness assessment and reporting system.  It sets performance standards that reflect the basic health-related fitness levels required for good health.  Grades K-3 practice activities that allow them to improve their health-related fitness.  Grades 4-5 also practice activities and are then tested to assess their levels of fitness.

These programs seek to produce levels of health-related fitness that will allow students to maintain healthy fitness levels throughout their lifetime.

The children also participated in traditional sports such as track, volleyball, soccer, kickball, basketball, and baseball.  Basic skills and movements were reinforced for our younger students to prepare them for success.

Special programs this year included an after-school basketball program, Jump Rope for Heart, Field Day, Unified Volleyball tournament and Unified Track Meet.
