Ground Breaking of our fabulous outdoor Kitchen begins in Fall 2012!
Edible Schoolyard Garden
Public School 216 is the first Edible Schoolyard affiliate in New York City.
The Edible SchoolYard:
- A 20,000 square foot organic garden planted with fruits and vegetables.
- A kitchen classroom in the garden with full time garden staff to teach
the children about soil, gardening, nutrition, and the environment.
Lessons will be related to standards-based classroom instruction in
literacy, science, math, social studies, and the arts.
A freestanding kitchen/classroom with innovative design elements will be constructed.
The students will be involved in getting food from the ground to the table preparing, cooking, and eating what they have grown.
A moveable heated greenhouse will be provided, so that children can plan, harvest, and prepare food during the cold months.

Family Garden Workday
Many PS216 families joined us as we planted, prepared garden beds, mulched, and much much more!
Whenever you join us for a garden experience, PLEASE be sure to wear closed-toe shoes and appropriate comfortable fitting clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Bring along plenty of drinking water and planting tools you especially like to use (we'll have plenty on hand for you to share!).

Enjoy the beautiful P.S 216 school yard garden with your family. See what your child gets to be a part of, and experience for yourself why they like it so much! Plus you can have fun and get a nice workout too! Bring your work gloves and a bag lunch for the family.

The Academy Curriculum
Environmental Studies in The Edible SchoolYard

Students will describe how the structures of plants and animals complement their "habitat" environment.
-
Students study and analyze how plants, animals and humans are connected in an ecosystem.
-
Students explore the impact of garbage on the environment and explore ways they can create less garbage in their lives—reusing, recycling, composting. Students use this information to simulate choices that will produce the least amount of waste materials.
