Edible Schoolyard Garden is coming! (:-)

Public School 216 is on its way to becoming the first Edible Schoolyard
affiliate in New York City.

What is an Edible SchoolYard?

  • A 20,000 square foot organic garden planted with fruits and vegetables.
  • A kitchen classroom in the garden with full time garden staff to teach
the children about soil, gardening, nutrition, and the environment.
Lessons will be related to standards-based classroom instruction in
literacy, science, math, social studies, and the arts.

A freestanding kitchen classroom with innovative design elements will be constructed.
The students will be involved in getting food from the ground to the
table preparing, cooking, and eating what they have grown.
A moveable heated greenhouse will be provided, so that children
can plan, harvest, and prepare food during the cold months.
