Aquatic Studies Academy

The school’s location in the Rockaway Inlet is very conducive for students to study the local waterways and the resources they provide, as well as the means for protecting those resources.

Science instruction at IS 14 currently emphasizes a hands-on approach, giving students the opportunity to discover important scientific principles through actual and concrete scientific experiences. In keeping with this approach, an integral part of the magnet program will be the development of a state-of-the-art aquatic laboratory, where students will experiment with fish farming and hydroponics. Numerous oceanic tanks that facilitate the set-up and maintenance of this environment will be constructed, enabling students to conduct their own studies, including controlled experiments, of a marine ecosystem.

· Construction of a high-tech, modern aquatic laboratory

· Curriculum focuses on freshwater and marine ecosystems

· Students have the opportunity to investigate topics such as aquaculture—the cultivation of the natural produce of water, and hydroponics—the science of sustaining and propagating the growth of organisms in an aquatic environment.

· Laboratory-based experiments, coupled with extensive classroom-based research on related concepts, will enhance students’ critical thinking skills as well as their science, math, and writing skills.

Technology Academy

The Technology Academy is a program designed to challenge students through a wide variety of intensive learning experiences in academics, foreign language, the arts, and with special emphasis on informational technology.

· Emphasis on technology throughout all curriculum areas

· Students learn music through technology

· Students will study basic computer programming

· Students will study robotics and video-conferencing to work in conjunction with the Aquatic Studies program.

Legal Studies Academy

The Legal Studies Program responds to a compelling need to guide young people in forming values and attitudes which will contribute to positive social behavior. The program objectives are to help students identify their rights and responsibilities under the law; promote stewardship of our nautical resources; develop skills in problem solving, critical and creative thinking and logic; enhance their written and oral skills; and to provide enhanced opportunities for students to do historical research correlated to Social Studies and Language Arts. Students in the Legal Studies Academy will base their studies around environmental law, in keeping with the school’s Aquatic Studies theme.

· Students conduct mock trials with the help of their law mentors, in a new state-of-the-art courtroom

· The curriculum includes guest speakers and visits to court rooms

· Students publish their own law journal

· Students study current events from a legal perspective

· Students learn to resolve conflicts peacefully

Enrichment

IS 14 also provides enrichment in the form of, high school leveled Regents courses for advanced students. Qualified students can participate in our after-school and/or Saturday programs in Math, Chemistry, and The Living Environment to earn High School Regents credit.
