Arts Programs

Ø PS 197 has an arts program which serves students in grades K to 5 including special education and English Language Learners. The visual arts program includes the study of various techniques including painting, printmaking, collage, famous artists and their works based on the Blueprint For The Arts. The music component focuses on music appreciation, an upper grade chorus, class plays and performances, a keyboard lab, and two Musical Extravaganzas. PS 197 has full time music, and two part-time Art cluster programs.

Ø We will have after school programs in art, drama and music for our English Language Learners along with our English proficient students. Our music and art teachers hold classes twice a week where children participated in visual arts activities and instrumental music.

Ø PS 197 is using Title I parent involvement money to fund a Making Books Sing series of family workshops. The focus of this is for parents to understand the impact of arts on children, academically and socially. It exposes parents to local arts providers. The program provides all children, general education, special education and English Language Learners in grades K to 5 and their parents, evening workshops and a performance at Kingsborough College.

Ø Studio in School provides morning parent workshop in painting and modeling with clay.
