: Authors utilize relationships among characters to reflect the importance of community
Unit 2 Overview - Kindergarten
Over the course of the next few weeks, students will be exploring various texts in the reading and writing workshops. Through reading and writing, students will be learning how texts work. Students will be using reading comprehension strategies to enhance their reading habits. Through the pairing of fiction and nonfiction books on related topics, this unit builds on students’ understanding of how characters interact with one another and how this impacts on the building of a community. Students will stop and jot to recall facts in nonfiction books and plot details in fiction books.
Students will respond to text-based questions to deepen their comprehension of the various topics. Students will examine text features in nonfiction books to better understanding certain animals in their habitats. Then, this information will be applied to certain fiction texts to help students see the relationships among the characters in these habitats. Specificall, the coral reef will be examined before reading A House for Hermit Crab; next animals preparing for winter will be explored after reading A Bed for the Winter; and finally, pond life will be viewed before reading Make Way for Ducklings.
This unit is particularly effective at teaching how the characters interact in their community for comfort, survival and safety. For example, in the winter some animals will hibernate, migrate or take steps to adapt. The seasonal changes present challenges for the animals requiring, them to make certain preparations in order to survive through the winter in their communities.
Throughout this unit, we will infuse the Habits of Mind and the academic and personal behaviors attributed to successful people. Particularly, working to build strong content knowledge, having persistence, showing good work habits as well as communication and collaboration will be discussed and incorporated into lessons. These tasks are part of the kindergarten common core curriculum.
