School Homework Policy

The purpose of homework is to reinforce what is learned during classroom instruction. It is also designed to help children develop and strengthen their sense of self-discipline, personal responsibility and independent thinking.

Homework is assigned to students every night (including Fridays) and is to be completed on the night it is assigned and submitted to the teacher during class the following day unless otherwise specified. All students in grades 2-5 should have an assignment pad to copy the homework assignments. Children are strongly encouraged to work on homework on their own. This is one of the ways the teacher(s) can assess if children understand the concept taught. We prefer to see that students make an effort and struggle than having the homework completed for them by well meaning parents or caregivers just so that they get it right.

All children are expected to read each night and to respond in a reading response journal or in a log in addition to their other homework.

We also require that all youngsters review the math concepts they have learned in school during the school day at home in the evening. Children in grades 2-5 are responsible for memorizing math facts. Please help you child in studying their sheets so that they may master their math facts.

Parents are urged to review and sign their children’s homework every evening.

When a child repeatedly fails to complete homework assignments, the teachers will contact their parent. Parents are urged to support the teacher’s efforts to make sure their children are learning.
