Book of the Month
Ms. Nelson’s February Book of the Month
Read All About It!

My choice for our February Book of the Month is Read All About It!, by Laura Bush and Jenna Bush. The famous mother and daughter team were the former First Lady and her the daughter of former President George Bush. The reason for this choice is because readers many times, only read because they are assigned a selection or a book. The reader many times will not allow their imagination to run while during a reading.
January Book of the Month
Flying Over Brooklyn

Author: Myron Uhlberg
Illustrator: Gerald Fitzgerald
Flying Over Brooklyn is a warm and memorable story about an endearing character filled with innocence and emotion. The main character delights in the simple pleasures of a snowy day. With all the focus on the cold wintry weather let us take this opportunity, like the character in this book to look at our neighborhood in a different way.
Let us see the Cyclone and the bridges that make Brooklyn so unique.
Let us look at the everyday, and see today as something special.
Think of what treasures you will see as you FLY OVER BROOKLYN!
December Book of the Month
The Three Questions

Written by Jon J. Muth and Leo Tolstoy
My choice for our December Book of the Month, The Three Questions by Jon J. Muth, and Leo Tolstoy, it is a warm memorable story about an endearing character named Nikolal. He is searching for the “right thing to do”, and the “best person” he can become.
With the focus at this time of year looking back to 2011- and looking ahead to 2012, I felt this book was timely. This story can be used as we begin our writing in the area of wishes, or tasks for 2012. It can also be used in conjunction with our study of great men and woman we will be looking at in January.
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Nelson
November Book of the Month
Night of the Moon

Written by Hena Khan
Illustrated by Julie Paschkis
Night of the Moon is a warm memorable story about a Muslim family and their traditions. The story is told through the eyes of Yasmeen and how she learns the traditions of her family culture.
With the focus at this time of year being traditions and customs, I feel it was a good choice for November. We begin holiday celebrations with Thanksgiving and then we have the winter celebrations in December.
This book also has a link to science in describing the phases of the moon, and how these phases effect holiday celebrations.
October Book of the Month
I’m Gonna Like Me
Letting Off a Little Self-Esteem

Written by Jamie Lee Curtis & Laura Cornell
My choice for our October Book of the Month is a funny and memorable story about two
endearing characters, one boy and one girl, who are learning to love their best qualities.
The illustrations will make any reader smile.
With the school year in full swing, and individual strengths and weakness of academic ability coming to light,
it is a good time to look at what we like about ourselves. These characters identify their individual strengths
and weaknesses throughout the story. Since many children are sensitive to how others treat them, this will assist with discussions about seeing the good in all people. Let us forge ahead as we see the excellence in all.
I hope you enjoy my choice for Octobers Book of the Month!
Sincerely,
Ms. Nelson, Principal
