Athletics & Fitness

The mission of the Public Schools Athletic League is to provide opportunities for educating students in physical fitness, character development and socialization skills through an athletic program that fosters teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship.
The goal of the C.H.A.M.P.S. Middle School Sports & Fitness program is to improve student fitness levels and overall health by increasing opportunities for children to engage in physical activity, regardless of athletic ability. The program promotes health-related fitness through a mix of several after-school and before-school activities including traditional sports, non-traditional sports, and fitness activities. The ultimate goal is for students to grow to be C.H.A.M.P.S. — Cooperative, Healthy, Active, Motivated, Positive Students — for life.

Mr. Perri’s Physical Education program services students in Pre- kindergarten through fifth grade. Students make the most of their designated Physical Education time by immediately engaging in a warm- up activity upon arrival to the gym area.

Mr. Perri’s lessons are based upon the New York State Physical Education standards and include physical fitness games, cooperative activities and team sports. Furthermore, all lessons include an emphasis on good sportsmanship.

Additionally, students in fourth and fifth grade participate in the New York City Fitnessgram assessment. This assessment measures various facets of their overall physical health including flexibility, strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness.

Students are currently participating in FUEL TO PLAY 60: http://www.fueluptoplay60.com/index_flash.php

It is a program designed to promote good eating habits and good exercise habits for students.

The students have been registering, logging on and accumulating points for eating well and doing physical activity both in and out of school. Top scorers may receive prizes.
