The 51st Avenue Academy, "The Path To Academic Excellence" between PS7 and IS5, is a barrier free school serving a culturally diverse student body. The instructional programs are delivered to heterogeneous classes with high achieving students across the grades. There is also a high-performing project-oriented class in the 5th grade. For optimal literacy improvement, our English Language Learners go online and use KidBiz3000, a web-based reading and writing program. Our 4th grade students participate in the NYC HOPE/SPARK program. We provide teachers of English as a Second Language, Special Education, and General Education teachers working in a Departmentalized and Collaborative models. Youngsters are motivated to achieve high standards in Literacy, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science because of the integration of technology in the curricula. A team of teachers incorporates "Blogging" in the classroom using it as a way for students to write about what they do in the class and share their writing pieces with the community at large. Additionally, students participate in a myriad of extra curricular activities -- Physical Education, Band, General Music, Art, Violin, Ballroom Dancing, Theater, Chorus, and computers. Students also participate in monthly presentation of plays written by each class and Guidance assemblies that focus on values and research. A highly qualified and dedicated staff makes all this possible.
