Public School 154Q is dedicated to ensuring that every child is provided with academic rigor in a standards-based, thinking curricula. In our child-centered developmentally appropriate classrooms our children come to school every day with clear expectations for excellence, and are encouraged to become educational risk-takers in their nurturing classroom environments. Parents are invited to become active partners in the educational experiences of their children. We are committed to providing engaging, instructional challenges that support our children on their journey towards meeting global challenges of the new millennia.

We are proud members of CFN 207 and are additionally partnered with Teachers College Reading/Writing Project. Faculty and students work tirelessly to deepen their understanding and knowledge of the Common Core Learning Standards. Skillful instruction and our commitment to workshop teaching fosters a love and appreciation of learning among the school community. Our children are nurtured and encouraged to develop the myriad of skills and strategies necessary to become lifelong learners. We are proud to boast that 100% of our staff members are recognized by NYS as “highly qualified” and, with the exception of retirements, our turn-over rate is 0%.

The school community values and respects the multiculturalism of our children and their families who come from dozens of countries around the globe. The Public School 154Q community is a Title I school located in the Flushing section of District 25 in Queens. Our surrounding community is comprised of private homes, garden apartments, high-rise buildings and government subsidized housing. Our Pre-K to fifth grade school serves a population of approximately 625 students from culturally diverse backgrounds. The community is home to many new immigrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, El Salvador, Columbia, Guatemala and Peru to name a few. The school building is well-kept, where children come first, as evidenced by the plethora of student work displayed throughout the building.

PS 154Q recognizes that in order to meet the diverse needs of the students, the role of the school has to expand beyond traditional definitions of teaching and learning. Through funding sources over the years we are able to offer our students the opportunity to participate in various residencies. Grades PreK-5 have participated in a residency with Circle of Dance, and Pre-K and our Title III after-school students participated in a residency with Lu Ann Adams, Storyteller. Our residency with Circle of Dance has been ongoing and growing for the past 8 years. Our current fifth grade has participated in this residency since Pre-Kindergarten. We also expose our students to other culturally diverse forms of art through our “Amazing Assemblies,” purchased from school fundraisers as a means for infusing exposure to the arts when our budget is limited.

Our PTA has strengthened over the past 2 years and offers another layer of expertise and support to our community. The school and the PTA have worked passionately and diligently to grow parent involvement over the past 2 years. Our vision and commitment to increasing parent engagement is reflected in an exceptionally high rate of parent participation and responses in the school survey
