PS 193 PTA Meeting Minutes – Recorded by Danielle Vargas

April 2, 2012

9:00pm – 10am

1.    Updates by Joyce Bush, Principal

·       Raz Kids online is now available to our Kindergarten students

·       Safety Committee:  The one-way streets on 11th avenue and 12th avenue will be put into effect over the spring break.

·       Our basketball team has won 6 games in a row!

·       Please continue to fill out your Learning Environment Survey.  Last year we had only 70% completed and we would like 100%.

·       New staff: Two new paras, 1 health para and 1 bilingual para, as well as a new custodian who starts 4/13

 

2.    Presentation on Cyber Safety by 109th precinct

·       SGT McGowan, Monitors juvenile department at 109th Precinct

·       Internet safety spoke to students

·       Cyber Bullying on Facebook - Young children should not be on it.  Not many laws on cyber bullying unless it is a direct threat so police can only do so much. 

·       Parents should monitor children and keep all their passwords.

·       Phones have access to many of these sites so parents must monitor phones.  Camera phones especially, many times pictures are taken and are out there forever.

·       Graffiti is now automatic arrest

 

3.    Changes to the New York State Tests By Diane Tratner

 

·       Grades 3, 4, & 5 ELA and Math will be longer and harder.  All three grades will have a three-day test.

·       Day 2 will be harder with listening responses and then two more reading passages.

·       ELA test: April 17th, 18th, and 19th

·       Math test: 25th, 26th, and 27th

·       9 a.m. start.  90 minutes for tests plus some students get time and half. 

 

4.    PTA Board Nominations for 2012-2013 school year POSTPONED

 

·       PTA purchased new DVDs for recess and preps: School House Rock and other learning programs

·       Library Leaves: PTA will sell 20 more at $30 to continue to raise money for books

·       Last day of test prep: PTA will provide a pizza party the last 15 minutes of ELA and Math

·       Cookie dough comes in tomorrow 4/3.  Pick up 1:30-3:30

 

 

5.    SLT Parent Nominations for the 2012-2014 school years POSTPONED

 

6.    Presentation of Certificates to NED Award Recipients

·       Students were chosen by their teachers to receive a certificate for representing the NED Beliefs

                       o   Never Give Up, Encourage Others, and Always Do your Best!

 

7.    Upcoming Events

·       Book fair Buy one get one free: May

·       Mother’s Father’s day fair: May 4th

May 8th, 2012

1.    Updates by Joyce Bush, Principal

·       Basketball game tomorrow at PS 107. 

·       May 18th All-star game at Thomas Edison. Cheerleaders will also be invited.

·       Today was Teacher Appreciation Day and PTA bought the teachers and staff luncheon

·       PTA funds and supports school Dance Program and non-fiction books thanks to successful fundraising

 

2.    Guest Speaker, Principal Richard Garino from JHS 194

·       More students and more Teachers: 1100 students, 12 classes per grade an 28-30 per class

·       Students have 7 teachers

·       8:05 Homeroom and end of the day meets back at Homeroom and travel with same students all day, except for 8th graders to prepare them for HS

·       Floors and Lunch is separated by grades: 6th grade, 1st floor – 7th grade, 2nd floor – 8th grade, 3rd floor

·       To get in SP, students must attain a 4 in ELA and Math state tests and maintain an 85 in main subject classes to stay in the program.

·       Performing Arts Electives:  Band, Drama, Dance, Fine Arts, and Film and Video

·       May 29th - 6th grade orientation.  Meet AP, Dean, and guidance counselors since each grade has their own team that will follow them through the years

·       6th grade rotates electives through the year

·       Dress code set up by SLT: collared shirts, non-distressed jeans, and fitted at waist

 

3.    Presentation on Special Ed Reform by Leo Murillo, Student Support Services, Network (CFN 535)

·       Each student deserves to be educated in their zoned schools

·       Students are currently being sent to other schools if their zoned school does not offer specific services.

·       Students should be educated in least restrictive environments

·       It is now the zoned schools responsibility to provide services to their students, not send them to other schools.
