School Homework Policy
The Department of Education recognizes and encourages homework as a valuable and appropriate extension of activities done in school. Homework provides excellent opportunities for developing good study habits, for providing individual differences and abilities, and for developing initiative on the part of the student.
The Department of Education believes that parental involvement in students’ homework is essential to making homework an integral part of the educational program. Parents are expected to encourage and monitor homework assignments, and to the extent possible, provide conditions that are conducive to their completion.
It is the teacher’s responsibility to ensure that homework assignments are purposeful, within the capabilities of the students, explicit and challenging. Homework must be checked and evaluated on a daily basis. This may be accomplished in a variety of ways. The type of homework and the amount of time necessary to complete a homework assignment will vary from kindergarten to fifth grade. It is understood that some students will complete assignments in less time while others may require more time. Suggested times per night, excluding reading and long-term assignments are:
AVERAGE MINUTES PER NIGHT
Grade Minutes
Kdg. 10 – 20
1st 20 – 30
2nd 30 – 45
3rd 30 – 60
4th 30 – 60
5th 45 – 60
Homework will be assigned on a daily basis, including on weekends. Homework will also be assigned over school vacations. These assignments will be given 1-week prior to vacation. Please be advised that reading is to be done on a daily basis all year round. Remember to sign off on your child’s reading log and calendar.
The teacher will schedule a conference with the parents and guidance counselor for children who repeatedly fail to complete homework assignments. Parents will be required to attend. Repeated failure will result in an unsatisfactory grade on the child’s report card.
