P.S. 46 PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Young people can build healthy bodies and establish healthy lifestyles by including physical activities in their daily lives. Regular physical activity in childhood improves strength and endurance, helps build healthy bones and muscles, helps control weight, reduces anxiety and stress, and increases self-esteem. Moderate amounts of daily physical activity are recommended for people of all ages. This amount can be obtained in longer sessions of more intense activities, such as jogging or playing basketball for 15-20 minutes.

Here at P.S. 46, physical education classes consist of 15 minutes of stretching and moderate aerobic exercises, 20-25 minutes of instruction and participation in such sports as soccer, basketball, volleyball, kickball, softball as well as numerous cooperative games and conditioning activities. Making physical activities enjoyable to children promotes confidence in their ability to be physically active.

Finally, according to the California Department of Education, a direct relationship exists between academic achievement and physical fitness in California’s public school students. The statewide study provided compelling evidence that the physical well being of students has a direct impact on their ability to achieve academically.

Here at P.S. 46, we share the same philosophy. Sound bodies equal sound mines!
