The Principal's Monthly Message

September 2010

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you back to this new school year.  We got off to a very successful start and look forward to a successful year.  This year, we would like to welcome Mrs. Jodi Solomon, 3rd grade teacher, and Alissa Zickmund, Kindergarten teacher, to the P.S. 46 family.

Some of the more critical days are now taking place and they often set the tone for the entire school year.  As parents, you play a pivotal role in nurturing your child’s academic skills and positive attitude towards learning.  The staff and I invite you to join with all of us to make the school-community partnership productive as we all share in the responsibility of educating our children.  Please be sure to check backpacks, folders, and student planners daily for student assignments, teacher’s notes, and other important announcements.  It is also important for you to come to school functions, meetings and events.  Get involved!

Attendance and punctuality are also extremely important.  Children who don’t attend school regularly and who come in late fall behind, perform lower on tests, and can have a hard time making and keeping friends.  As such please make all doctor, dental, and other appointments during non school hours.  Please do not schedule family vacations and trips during the times when school is in session.

It is also important for you to talk to your child about school and make sure that all of the homework is being completed on a timely basis.  All students in grades 1 through 5 should have a P.S. 46 student planner and folder.  This is the place for them to write their homework in and to put all loose papers to be brought back and forth to school. Make sure that your child has a quiet place to study.  Decide on a regular study time and be certain that your child’s book bag is packed up before bed.

I am always available to speak with you.  As our motto says, “P.S. 46 – Joined Together in Excellence,” and together we can do great things!

Thank you for your continued interest in your child’s education.

I am very pleased to announce that the Chancellor and the New York City Department of Education have again recognized P.S. 46 Queens as a high achieving school and that our school has been awarded an “A” for the fourth year in a row on the School Progress Report.
