Parent Monthly Letter
May 2013
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Happy Spring!
Our art students continue to have their art work displayed city wide and Congratulations go to 6th grader, Nikkita Tarrao, 7th graders – Rachel Cho, Katherine, Leong, Jackie Woo and 8th graders – Ahmad Ali, Nicholas Lucio and Jamie Song. Their artwork was chosen to be professionally framed and exhibited in the Constructing The City Art Show at Centerview Partners in NYC. The exhibit opens on May 14th and each student will receive $100 honorarium for his or her efforts!
Our 6th grade art students showed their community spirit by creating eco posters for earth month, they are currently featured on State Senator Toby Stavinsky’s web site (stavinsky.ny.senate.gov) and 7th graders contributed artwork to the DOE’s WELLNESS AND FITNESS Program. 7th Grader Alicia Lin was selected as middle school runner up and her artwork will be featured on the DOE website and on posters and calendars that will be distributed to schools citywide. Additionally her work earned our school $250 for fitness equipment!
Congratulations to Calise Jin of class 821. Calise won the Women’s History Month Art Contest sponsored by Assemblymen Edward Braunstein’s office. Her artwork will be on the cover of next year’s brochure.
MS 158 is pleased to announce that 6 sixth grade students were accepted into Hunter High School for September. We are very proud of their academic success.
The Beacon Program is slated to close this summer. Let your voices be heard and contact your local Politicians to prevent this from happening. For more information please visit www.CampaignforChildrenNYC.com .
Remember that school begins at 8 am. Students are to be in their first period class and seated at that time. Please remind your children to be on time in the morning and dress appropriately. Short short skirts, short skirts with leggings and skinny jeans are not permitted. Absence and lateness records are part of the criteria that High Schools review in the selection process.
Many of us experience spring fever this time of year. We want to maintain academic rigor and encourage you to make sure your children are completing projects and homework to the best of their ability. School does not end until June 26th. We need your support to remind your children to maintain high quality work and continue good study habits. Also, the 37.5 minute extended day is a ninth period. Absence is recorded and monitored. Please encourage your child to attend if he/she needs extra help. We are working together to ensure success.
Respectfully,
Marie Nappi
Principal

April 2013
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Spring is in the air!
Ms.Navre, our dance instructor, did a wonderful job coordinating the Spring Dance Performance. The Jazz Band and Chorus added a special touch to the spectacular performance. It was truly a coordination of talents. We are very lucky to have such talented students & Staff!
High School Acceptance letters were sent home last month. Congratulations to our Seniors!
Over 155 were seniors accepted into Specialized High Schools. We are very proud!
The Learning Environment Surveys were distributed on Parent Teacher conference night/afternoon. If you did not attend they were sent home with your child in a green envelope. Please take the time to fill it out and mail it back in the return envelope provided. April 12th is the deadline to return them.
You can also complete the survey online at www.myschoolsurvey.org . Please log in using the 8-digit survey access code printed on your survey to get started. Your password is 2013. If you are unable to locate your survey access code, please contact the Survey Hotline at 1-800-690-8603.Help our school earn our A on our Progress Report with your positive returns. Deadline date to complete your survey is April 12th.
Report Cards will be distributed on April 26th. This is an opportunity for you to review your child’s strengths and discuss strategies for improvement in the areas of concern. It would be advisable to set goals for the last marking period and also a plan of action to make those goals achievable. Remember that there is extra support available for Regents Review in Earth Science and Integrated Algebra from April 13th until June 8th. All ELA/Math Saturday review courses will end on April 13th.
Ms. Schecter, Ms. Coman, Ms. Koenigsberg and Mr. Asaro are busy planning the Spring Arts Show and Senior Art Exhibit. Please join us the evening of May 8th for the grade 8 Chorus and Band and May 15th for the grade 7 Chorus and Band, at 7 pm in the Marie Curie Theater for an evening of entertainment. Tickets are $5.00 each and can be purchased each day in school or at the door on the evening of the performance. There is limited seating so please remind your child to purchase tickets ASAP. (The Senior Art show will be held from 5pm-6pm in the Gallery on May 8th).
Congratulations to the Math Counts team who won 3rd place during the New York State competition on March 16th under the coaching of Mr. Sampson. We are very proud. Also, Alicia Lin was a runner up in the Wellness Poster contest and her artwork will be featured on the Department of Education 2014 Wellness Poster and Calendar next year.
On April 16-18th students in grades 3-8 will take the New York State ELA Exam. April 24-26th the New York State Mathematics Assessment will be administered. NYS prohibits any electronic equipment in students’ possession on testing days. Please make certain that no equipment is brought to school, cellphones, iPods, etc. Tests will be invalidated should your child be in possession of prohibited electronic equipment. The State Exams are vital to the measurement of your child’s academic progress and it is important that they attend school for the administration of the exam. Students who do miss school for this event will be marked absent.
Please note the testing dates on the back of this letter for the NYS ELA and Math Assessment Exams.
Here are a few tips to help your child succeed:
- Have your child eat a healthy breakfast / free breakfast is available in the school cafeteria at 7:30am
- Get a good night’s sleep
- Arrive early to school – before 8:00am
- Bring two sharpened number 2 pencils to school each day of testing
- Tell your child to take their time and read all directions slowly and carefully
- Keep a positive attitude toward the exam
**Remind your child after they complete the exam to go back and review their answers, making sure that they didn't make any careless mistakes (such as putting the right answer in the wrong place or skipping a question). Spend the last remaining minutes going over the hardest problems before they turn in the test.
Once again, thank you for your continued support of our school.
Respectfully,
Marie Nappi

March 2013
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The SO Winter Dance was a huge success. The students enjoyed themselves and danced all afternoon. Many thanks to Ms. Weibman for the time spent planning the event. I would also like to thank the teachers and parents who volunteered their time as chaperones and assisted with the ticket sales, decorating, setting up and clean up. It was truly a collaborative effort.
I would like to thank the parents and teachers for the magnificent turn out at the Parent-Teacher Conferences. As a reminder, any student who is in need of extra help may attend the 37.5 minutes extended day. Our ELA and Math Saturday classes end on April 13th. Beginning on April 13th the Earth Science Regents review and Integrated Algebra Regents review classes will begin. Session I: 9:00 – 10:30 am and Session II: 10:30 – noon. No registration is required.
Use of Communication Devices: All students are prohibited from bringing cell phones and other electronic devices into a classroom or other location where a State exam is being administered. Test proctors, test monitors, and school officials shall retain the right to collect and hold any prohibited electronic devices prior to the start of the test administration. Admission to the test shall be denied to any student who is in possession of a cell phone or other prohibited electronic device and refuses to relinquish it. This is a directive from the NYS & NYC Department of Education.
The Office of School Food reflects that MS 158Q owes over $4000 in outstanding lunch money. It will eventually be deducted from our school’s budget due to insufficient funds in student accounts. Please make sure your child’s lunch account is funded each week. You may deposit money into your child’s lunch account by logging on at: www.myLunchMoney.com .It is unfortunate that we may lose money that should go towards your child’s education. Thank you to all who keep your child’s lunch account up to date and to all parents who completed their lunch forms in a timely manner. Please call Ms. Polizzi if you need help with your lunch account.
The annual Learning Environment Survey has been distributed. If you did not pick up your survey during report card conferences it was sent home with your child. For additional information, go to www.nyc.gov/schools/surveys. Please complete the survey no later than April 12, 2013.
Graduation Day will be held on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 9:00am. The Graduation ceremony will be conducted at Queens College Kupferberg Center which is located at 65-30 Kissena Blvd., Flushing, NY 11367. The Graduation Dance is scheduled for the evening of June 7, 2013.
ARIS: Thank you to all the parents who have accessed ARIS to check on their personal information and their child’s progress. You can view your child’s profile in the ARIS parent website at www.nyc.gov/schools/ARIS If you need assistance accessing your child’s account, please contact Ms. Polizzi for your password.
News from our Art Department: Mr. Asaro and Ms. Koenigsberg and I would like to congratulate MS 158 artists whose work is on display city wide. Six students’ artwork was included in the Ecofest 2012 poster. It was designed by the renowned American Artist/Designer Peter Max! February saw nine of our students’ artwork displayed in Past and Future, a professional art exhibit at the Eton Park building in Manhattan and five senior artists work was also included in Southern Queens Park Associations 11th annual art exhibit. As always our school art is filled with great student artwork and on May 8th we invite you to our school gallery where we host our own 7th annual Senior Art Show. Hope to see you there!
Once again our BEACON Program is in jeopardy and may close. Let your voices be heard and contact your local Politicians to prevent this from happening. We will keep you updated via email and school messenger. You may also contact Ms. Miller, Beacon Coordinator at 718-423-2266.
Valentines for Veterans was a successful drive. Thank you all for your kind generosity. The veterans enjoyed your heartfelt valentines and the many goodies donated.
On behalf of the faculty and staff of Marie Curie MS 158 I would like to extend my best wishes to you and your families as many of you celebrate Passover, Easter or Spring!
A very happy St. Patrick’s Day to all!

Parent Monthly Letter
February 2013
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I would like to start out by thanking the members of the PTA for arranging the wonderful Scholastic Book Fair. I want to commend the parent volunteers for the many hours of work devoted to making the Book Fair a success. The students and staff were eager to attend and purchase reading selections that Scholastic had to offer. The fair succeeded in motivating the children to read.
National School Counseling week takes place the week of February 4th. This week is dedicated to all schools’ Guidance Counselors for their positive impact on our students’ lives and futures. Please join us in thanking our counselors for a job well done.
As a reminder our Winter Recess dates have changed. School will be closed on Monday February 18th and Tuesday February 19th. School will reopen on Wednesday February 20th.
Report Cards:
On Thursday, February 14th report cards will be distributed along with the results from the Tasks administered in Math, ELA, Science and Social Studies. The tasks are posted on the DOE website for your review. Please take time to discuss your child’s accomplishments and areas of concern. If your child received a Promotion in Doubt letter you may want to take advantage of the free programs offered below. You may discuss any concerns with his/her teachers at the Report Card Conferences scheduled for Wednesday evening, February 27th from 6:30pm-9:00pm and Thursday afternoon from 12:30pm-2:30pm. If you feel you may need more time with your child’s teachers, please request a team meeting. There will be a brief meeting for parents of ELL students at 6:00 pm in room 106A on the evening of February 27th. Contact the school if you request a translator to be available and the time of your expected arrival.
As a reminder, the school offers an extended day program (37 ½ minutes) for any child in need of extra help. Help is offered in all subject areas every Mon.-Thurs from 2:20 pm – 2:57.5pm. Mandated students risk promotion if they are not taking advantage of this offering. If there is a specific subject in which your child needs assistance, please contact your Assistant Principal for placement. Also, additional Project Achieve Mathematics and ELA classes began Saturday, January 26th through April 13th .There will not be Saturday classes on February 16th, March 23rd and 30th.
Session One 9:00 – 10:30 am
Session Two 10:30 – 12:00 pm
Grade 6 Mathematics Ms. Manus, room 200 English, Ms. Corsentino room 217
Grade 7 Mathematics Ms. Wachsman, room 203 English, Ms. Hughes, room 207
Grade 8 Mathematics Mr. Sampson, room 201 English, Ms. Gibbons, room 205
Some of you may find enclosed with your child’s report card a letter that will reflect the balance due for school lunch. It is imperative that this account is paid up to date. Eighth grade balances need to be paid in full prior to graduation.
There will be an SO Winter Dance scheduled for the afternoon of February 8th in the cafeteria from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The cost for tickets will be ($8). Tickets sales will begin on February 4th and will continue during each lunch period. A signed permission slip is required to purchase a ticket. Permission slips have been emailed to parents by our parent coordinator and are available in the main office. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to pick up your child on the day of the dance. Do not wait for your child to call before coming. This detains chaperones unnecessarily.
“Valentine’s Day Candy Gram” Students will be supporting the National Junior Honor Society by purchasing a Valentine’s Day Candy Gram from Monday February 4th through Friday February 8th . These lollipops will be sold during students’ lunch periods for $1 each. Candy grams will be delivered to recipients on Valentine’s Day.
Learning Environment Surveys will be available for pick up by parents in the Main Office during Parent Teacher Conferences, Tuesday, February 26th and Wednesday February 27th. There is an April 5th deadline. All surveys must be mailed or completed online. We need to have a great participation response. The survey affects our Progress Report grade and provides feedback to help us to make positive changes within our school environment. Help us to get an ‘A’ this year!
Please attend the Parent Workshop on Wednesday, February 6th at 8:30am in our School Auditorium for further information pertaining to the Learning Environment Survey and Report Card Conferences. Should you have any questions and or concerns, you may contact Margaret Polizzi, Parent Coordinator at 718-423-8100 ext. 1245.
I look forward to meeting with you at the report card conferences. Thank you for your cooperation and enjoy the winter recess.

Parent Monthly Letter
January 2013
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The New Year: A time to bring from the past all that is right and good, to give to the future the best we have to offer. Hallmark
Taking a look back, the Winter Concert was a success. Under the direction of Ms. Schecter and Ms. Coman, the students gave a wonderful performance that put everyone into the spirit of the season. In addition, many visitors were fascinated by the artistic abilities of our students thanks to the talents of Ms. Koenigsberg and Mr. Asaro.
The Saturday Project Achieve Program will be starting support classes for our students beginning Saturday, January 26th. Students will be able to attend ELA and Mathematics classes from 9:00 - 10:30 A.M. and 10:30 – 12 noon. See information on the back of this letter.
Cell phones, IPODS, MP3 Players, and all other electronic devices are prohibited from school as per the Chancellor’s Regulations. Students risk losing such expensive equipment and the school is not responsible for replacing prohibited devices.
We are looking forward to the Scholastic Book Fair which will be held the week of January 28th. If there are any parents who would like to volunteer please email Margaret Polizzi at mpolizzi@schools.nyc.gov or call the school.
I would like to thank you for your support during the Big Apple fundraiser, the food donations for City Harvest, the Toy Drive, Penny Harvest and the M.S. 158 Cares School Supplies Drive. Our students collected over 2.500 pounds of food. We are certainly a caring community of learners and each of the charities appreciates your generosity.
There are many student lunch accounts that are past due. Lunch was free for all students during the months of November and December. Please update your child’s lunch account so that it is not in arrears. You may deposit money into your child’s account by creating an account on line at www.myLunchMoney.com. Your child’s District ID number is their OSIS number located on the top of their report card.
Effective January 7th, the MTA will add on an additional Q27 run which will start at 47th Avenue and Francis Lewis Blvd at 2:26pm. This will try to ensure that your child gets a seat and not have to wait for a crowded Q27 coming from Flushing with College Students.
On a serious note: Double parking is illegal at all times. You cannot double park or park in a school zone when the school is in session. This is a New York City law. For the safety of our students, please adhere to this especially during student drop off and pick up.
On behalf of the faculty and staff of Marie Curie Middle School 158, I would like to extend my best wishes to you and your families as we welcome in the New Year.
Respectfully,
Marie Nappi

Marie Curie Middle School 158Q
Parent Monthly Letter
December 2012
The year-end brings no greater pleasure than the opportunity to express good wishes. May your Holiday and New Year be filled with Happiness!
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Our thoughts are with all of you recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. The storm impacted so many people in so many ways. At times like this, it is natural to reflect on what is most important. Your children are our number one priority. If we can assist you in anyway, please contact the school.
It was a pleasure to meet and greet many parents during the Parent-Teacher conferences last month. Parent-Teacher communication strengthens the educational progress of your child. If you feel that your child needs extra support in any of the content areas, we are planning to have many programs Saturday and before/after school starting late January. Presently, there is also the extended period, 2:20 to 2.57 pm every Monday through Thursday, which will give your child the needed academic support. Although there is no need to sign up for any of the programs, we do require a permission slip indicating your knowledge of attendance.
Our Winter Arts Festival featuring the grade 8 Band, Jazz Band, Chorus and Art displays will be held on the evening of December 12th, at 7 pm in the school auditorium. Tickets will be on sale starting December 5th at a cost of $5.00 per ticket on a first come-first served basis due to limited capacity in the auditorium. Ms. Schecter will sell tickets to members of the band. Ms. Coman will sell tickets to the chorus. Please try to purchase your tickets in advance. Last year we were sold out before the performance.
The National Junior Honor Society will begin accepting donations of canned goods and non perishables for The City Harvest through December 14th. Thank you ahead of time for your generosity and helping those less fortunate.
MS 158 will also be participating in the “Toys for Tots” program presented by Assemblyman Edward C. Braunstein’s office. This program will put a smile on the face of needy children in our community. Your child may drop off an unwrapped new toy in the Main Office during the school day. Once again, thank you for your kind donation.
I’m pleased to announce our Spelling Bee winner Melinda Xiong, second place winner Alexis Heng and third place winner Christy Cheng. Congratulations to the winners and to all our participants on a job well done.
Thank you to all that donated to the “M.S. 158 Cares School Supplies Drive”. Our school collected school supplies for the children of PS/MS 43Q who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Now that the winter season is upon us, all students that arrive to school late will be required to fill out a late pass and hang their jackets in the late closet. At the end of period 8 or extended day, students wait in the auditorium to claim their coats. Students should not go outside first and then return for their jacket. Also, at lunchtime, students will only be permitted to go outside if they wear long sleeves or sweatshirts. Students are to hang up their coats in period one class each day. All long bulky scarves and vests should be hung in their period one closet. Just a reminder, students are expected to be in class at 8 am and will continue to be marked late if they arrive after 8:00 am. I’ve noticed many students coming to school without a jacket. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the cold weather.
There was a handout distributed that explains the procedures we will follow in case of a major storm day or citywide emergency. Please refer to it in the event of a severe storm. You may also access this letter on our school website. When looking at our school website, please visit the teacher web links that are posted.
On November 19, 2012 Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott sent a letter home to Families indicating a change of calendar for the month of February 2013. All schools will hold full day sessions from Wednesday, February 20, through Friday, February 22. These days were previously scheduled as part of mid-winter recess. Please mark your calendars accordingly. School will be closed on Monday, February 18th and Tuesday, February 19th, and Tuesday, June 4th is now a full-day.
Please take a moment to respond to the parent survey emailed by Ms. Polizzi, Parent Coordinator. If you did not receive the survey please let Ms. Polizzi know. If you are not on Ms. Polizzi’s email distribution list please email her at mpolizzi@schools.nyc.gov to be added.
On behalf of the faculty and staff of Marie Curie Middle School 158Q, I would like to extend my best wishes to you and your families for a happy and healthy holiday season. May your holidays be filled with peace, happiness and love.
Respectfully,
Marie Nappi
Principal

Parent Monthly Letter
November 2012
May the good things in life be yours in abundance, not only at Thanksgiving but throughout the coming year.
Dear Parents/Guardians,
November is a month to remember all the men and women who served our country. It is also a time to give thanks for the family and friends that are so much a part of our lives. I would like to thank members of the Marie Curie family, especially the PTA, for sponsoring the Halloween Dance and to all the faculty, staff members and parents that took time out of their busy schedule to sell tickets, decorate, bake and chaperone the students. The children enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to the next dance.
Congratulations! Our school received a “B” on our progress report in spite of the many changes with scale scores and standards. Please log onto the DOE website for MS 158Q and click on statistics. You will be able to access our Progress Report, NYS report card and the Learning Environment Survey. We have already set rigorous goals and action plans for the school year and need your cooperation as well.
ARIS Parent link
Please go on line and view your child’s profile and NYS test scores in the ARIS parent website at
www.nyc.gov/schools/ARIS . If you would like a hard copy of the scores please call your grade Assistant Principal who will be able to print out the hard copy upon request. ARIS also will allow you to review your child’s history, contact information, and scores all in one place. If any contact information requires updating please submit the correct information or contact one of our secretaries. Please contact Ms. Polizzi, the Parent Coordinator, if you do not have a password to log in.
Report Cards will be distributed on Thursday, November 15th. Major subject classes are calculated differently in your child’s average than minor subjects. Major subjects carry more weight than minor subjects. After reviewing your child’s report card and your child’s tests/work, do you know your child’s strengths and weaknesses? Have you reviewed goals for this month with your child? Do you know the due date of upcoming project/and or tests? We need your support to create success.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Monday, November 19th from 6:30 to 9:00 pm and on Tuesday, November 20th from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. There will be an ELL Parent Meeting in Room 106A on Monday, November 19th at 6:00pm. Please be aware that conferences with the teacher will be limited to three minutes. Students should not accompany parents during the conferences due to space issues. Please make arrangements to leave your child home. Translators will be available upon request; please inform Ms. Polizzi should you need a translator upon receipt of this letter. If more time is needed, please make arrangements with the teacher for additional time on another day. The week of November 13th is also Open School Week. We encourage you to visit your child’s classrooms and experience a school day at Marie Curie MS 158.
High School Applications are to be completed and returned to Mr. Epstein no later than Tuesday, November 13th.
Academic Support Programs
Due to severe budget cuts we are not able to provide academic/enrichment programs at this time.
We will be gradually starting classes as money is allocated. In addition to the 37.5 minute extended day classes, we would like to offer academic support/enrichment programs such as: peer tutoring, Game 24, Math Counts, English Language Learner classes and the Math/ELA support classes to name a few. More information will be available in the December parent letter. Also, donations of a ream of paper to the school would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to all who have already donated paper.
ELL Classes will be held Tuesday through Friday from 7:25am – 7:55am. Students should report to Ms. Vlaco in room 106A. Ms. Parente will instruct the afternoon ELL classes in room 106B on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:00pm-4:00pm.
Lunch Forms
Thank you for filling out your child’s lunch form and having them return it to school in a timely manner. As of today we have 24 outstanding lunch applications. If you did not receive a lunch form, contact the main office and one will be sent home with your child.
Immunizations
Students who have not received the TDAP vaccination will be excluded from school. Letters have been sent home to those students who are missing the TDAP. Please contact our School Nurse, Ms. Archer, at extension 1224 if you have any questions with regards to the TDAP.
Ring Day for grade 8 students is November 7th during 6th period in the student cafeteria. If your child plans on purchasing a ring, please remind your child to bring his/her order form on that day.
Best wishes to you and your families for a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Parent Monthly Letter
September 2012
“Tell me what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”-Mary Oliver
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Welcome to a new school year! We are off to an amazing start. The sixth grade students were given lots of help and directions to assist in their navigation of the school and are adjusting nicely. I would like to thank our wonderful teachers and staff for their assistance in making the first day a success. I would also like to thank our custodial staff for the hard work they did over the summer preparing our school for a safe, clean and sparkling opening day.
Our theme for this year is “Dream, Plan and Achieve!” It is a wonderful motivational theme that recognizes good things happen if you try. Let’s cultivate this spirit throughout the year.
We are happy to welcome back our Assistant Principals, Ms. Dunn, who will supervise grade 7; Ms. Gerard, who will supervise grade 6; and Ms. Gluszak, who will supervise grade 8. Our Guidance Counselors also move with their grade; considering the severe budget cuts, we will only have two guidance counselors, Ms. McNamara will work with Grade 6 and 7 students and Mr. Epstein will work with grade 8 students and the High school application process. Please call 423-8100 and the menu choices will direct you to the appropriate counselor. In addition, you should know that you have the right to request a review and receive a copy of all of your child’s school records. Please welcome our new staff members: Ms. Delendick, our new Librarian and Ms. Archer our new School Nurse.
As a reminder students are to report to the school yard at or before 7:50 am and seated at 8 am. If you choose to drop off your child after 8 am then a late pass will be filled out at the security desk. Students will miss class time and will have to make it up on Fridays after school. School personnel and Security Officers are assigned to supervise the schoolyard at 7:40 am. The school day, period 1, starts at 8:00 am and ends at 2.57.5 pm if your child is in the extended day program. All other students are dismissed at 2:20 pm. On Friday the school hours are 8:00 am – 2:20 pm. In inclement weather, grade 7 and 8 students will report directly to the auditorium and grade 6 students will report to the students’ cafeteria at 7:50 am. Breakfast will be served every day in the students’ cafeteria from 7:30 am to 7:55 am.
Middle School 158 accommodates a Community Based Organization, namely, the Beacon Program which will begin on September 10, 2012. Thank you for your support in helping to maintain this program. If you need information about this after school program, call the Program Director, Ms. Martenia Miller at 423-2266.
Communication is key to understanding what your child is experiencing in school. We are going GREEN this year and after this letter, the monthly newsletter will be posted on the school’s DOE website and sent in an email attachment by the parent coordinator. Please make sure that you send Ms. Polizzi your email address to receive important school information. Hard copies will be available at all PTA meetings, in the Lobby and in the Main Office as well. The letters give information about upcoming events, test dates, meetings and a variety of school information. Please make sure to list an email address on the blue card for an additional contact and to make sure that you updated any change of address or telephone number with the Pupil Accounting Secretary, Ms. Puglisi. Phone messages will also be sent as reminders of important events and meetings.
September 20th is Meet the Teacher Night starting at 6:30 pm. Following the schedule, there will be a brief PTA meeting at 8:00 pm in the school auditorium to introduce you to the members of the PTA Executive Board. I look forward to seeing you there and welcoming the new sixth grade parents. Teachers and staff have worked very hard planning a rigorous, exciting and fun filled curriculum to help children be successful and reach their maximum potential.
Parents and teachers working together is a recipe for success. ‘Together we create success.’ Together we set high expectations for success for EVERY student. Your child should read at least 45 minutes every night. No excuses. I can’t be there to make sure but you can. All of the students should make it a goal to ready at least 30 books this year. Your child should be able to do the math to set a plan of how many books per month and how many hours per week to make it happen. There is a great website, http://www.khanacademy.org which will assist you and your child in any area especially Mathematics. It is free and explains many concepts. Challenge your child. We will! I look forward to a great year with your child. Thank you for sharing them with me. I am very lucky to have your child in my school.
We are looking forward to working together in making this a productive and memorable year for your child. Thank you for your collaboration and cooperation.
Respectfully,
Marie Nappi,
Principal
