English as a Second Language

English Language Learners (ELLs) had a great year in their ESL classes.  Students in grades kindergarten through second grade were given language instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Some exciting projects included an interactive science unit about the five sense, the four seasons "unwrapped", a Laura Nemeroff unit (complete with mini foods from stories!), and the life cycle of a butterfly, which included The Very Hungry Caterpillar artwork.  Our early childhood students flourished with new concepts, vocabulary, and word attack skills.
Our upper grade ELL students researched New York City and its five boroughs.  Beautiful display boards were created for each boroguh complete with postcards, brochures, maps, and attractions.  In addition, these students enjoyed the teaching of grammar through our new interactive SMARTboard.
The new Common Core Standards were introduced and our Ell students were off and running with them.  Our newcomers were given special attention to help them transition to their new English speaking world.  It was a productive and exciting year!
We are lookin forward to another great year in 2013-2014!
