Dear Parents,
This is our second Newsletter of the school year and I would like to recognize the following staff and students for their accomplishments:
· I want to thank Chancellor Dennis Walcott, Senator Tony Avella, and the parents of the PTA for visiting our school on Friday, October 7th.
· Congratulations to Adrienne Brown, College Advisor, for a very successful College Night, held on Thursday, October 13th. Many schools were represented and we had well over 400 students and parents who attended!
· Congratulations to Samantha Lugo, athletic and academic achiever at Martin van Buren High School!
· Congratulations to the senior class of 2011 whose group picture appeared in the Floral Park Bulletin
· Congratulations to our hard of hearing students for participating in the Games for the Physically Challenged which took place at the Mitchell Athletic Complex at Hofstra University in Uniondale.
· Congratulations to Naeka Peters, Student of Distinction, sponsored by the Queens County Savings Bank.
· We are proud to announce to inception of our new Cheerleading Team and thank its coach, Ms. Lisa Barbash, for volunteering.
Upcoming October Events at Martin Van Buren:
· Our Robotics Team has started meeting and is looking for Parent Sponsors. Anyone interested, please contact Ms. Jean, Assistant Principal, Science, at extension 2480.
· Our Student Organization is collecting for Cystic Fibrosis until Friday, October 28th. Anyone interested in donating please see one of our S.O. Reps or Mr. Greenspan, in Room B72.
· Our next PTA Meeting will be held Monday, October 17th in the school library at 6:30 PM
· Yearbook photos will be taking place on Wednesday, October 19th from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Any senior student interested in having their picture taken for the Yearbook, please see Mr. Greenspan in Room B72 ASAP.
· The next High School Fair will be held on Saturday, October 22nd and Sunday, October 23rd at Francis Lewis High School from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
· Open Mic Night, where students express themselves through poems, and songs, will be held on Wednesday, October 26th at 5:00 PM in the auditorium.
· Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on the evening of October 27th from 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM. Reports Cards will be distributed to Parents; and afternoon of October 28th from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, Report Cards will be distributed to students.
· We will be holding a Flu Shot Clinic on Opening School evening, October 27th from 5:30 PM -8:30, for anyone interested; most insurances are accepted.
· During Parent Teacher Conference evening on October 27th, any parent of a senior student who is interested in having their picture taken with their child for the Senior Yearbook, please see Mr. Greenspan in Room B72
A Look Ahead:
· Senior Banner Day – Friday, November 4th during 5th period
· Freshman Open House – Wednesday, November 16th, details to follow
· Plymouth Rock Pie Eating Contest – Wednesday, November 23rd during 8th period
