The Many Programs Facilitated by Fren Nash, our Musical Director...

I have been teaching music to the students of P.S. 139 since 1991.
I have taught kindergarten through sixth grade classes and attempt to give all of my students a basic understanding of the language of music - including the elements of form, pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, tone color, harmony and notation. We look at various forms of music, including classical, contemporary, popular, Broadway musicals, music from around the world, novelty songs and more. This knowledge and understanding will, hopefully, lead the children to an appreciation and love of all forms of music.

In addition, I include recorder instruction as a part of the fourth grade curriculum and form a group of 30-40 of the most proficient musicians who perform at the International Festival each May. This group is called “The Flutie Tooties.”

My fourth and fifth grade students participate in the Music Memory program run by Riverside Symphony. They are taught 16 pieces of classical music and compete at the end of the year against other schools in a “Name That Tune” type of contest. We have won First Place honors for the past two years and hope to do as well this year.

Finally, I have implemented a fifth and sixth grade glee club, consisting of between 50 and 65 talented students who audition and are selected to be a part of this group. The PS 139 Glee Club performs in two, three and four-part harmony, and even include some choreography. Our performances have included singing the National Anthem at the NY Knicks and the NY Mets, as well as singing for a local senior group, Barnes & Noble Bookstores, the New York City Elementary School Principals' Association Convention, Midori and Friends Children's Music Festival, and our annual Winter Showcase and International Festival.
