Big Brother Big Sister Program 

The sixth grade Guidance office at Halsey is offering a Big Brother Big Sister Program.The goal of the program is to aid sixth graders in becoming comfortable in the middle/junior high school setting by providing support for  them with that transition.   Ninth graders will receive community service credit for high school as well. At the start of the fall and spring, twenty ninth graders are matched with twenty sixth graders. 

The program meets Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.  All ninth graders chosen are interviewed for the position. Besides offering a variety of activities, once a month there are field trips such as bowling. 

The program is run by Ms. Shriki, Ms.Sussman and Ms. Cohen. Any sixth grader interested in the next session can speak to Ms. Shriki.  Students will be chosen based on those who want to join and teacher recommendations.  



Enrichment Program Offerings

Engineering/Technology/Computers- Mr. Mandel Room 332 Mon/Tue/Wed/Thur. Mouse Squad: teams of young technicians assess and repair computer technology school-wide

Business/Computers:
Ms. Gutman/Room 323 Mon and Tues. The Stock Market Game: young investment bankers will invest fictional money in various stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Invest teams will monitor gains and losses in their portfolios as in real life. 

Creative Writing/Halsey Fusion Literary Website/Publishing: Ms. Stahl-Van Brackle/ Lab Room 301 Mon/Tue/Wed/Thur: Students will work on creative writing projects including poetry, short stories and essays.  Final writing pieces will be published on the school literary website.

Business/Entrepreneurship Academy: Ms. Chacko/Room 312/Wed and Thur: young entrepreneurs will have an opportunity to learn about the world of wholesale and retail while utilizing math and literacy skills.  Our school store will serve as the lab-site/retail store.  Program includes supervised business trips to downtown Manhattan for wholesale purchases

Horticultural Club: (Mon and Tue) Ms. Schectman/Room 204. Students will have the opportunity to learn about landscape design and work in the Halsey garden

Library/Media Club: Ms. Lucivero/ library. Get homework help, do research, work on your exit project or just read!

Living Environment/Biology Enrichment: Grade 9 students ONLY. Ms. Turriciano/Room 115.  Students will have the opportunity to further explore topics covered in the Living Environment/Biology curriculum and spend more time on task preparing for the SAT2 exam in Biology at the end of the year. 

Law Club/ Moot Court Competition: Ms. Oprisiu/Room 320/Mon and Tue.  Future lawyers study and debate historical Supreme Court cases.

Business/Marketing/Finance: Ms. Oprisiu/Room 320/Wed and Thur. Students introduced to the world of product development from concept to completion; Marketing Teams analyze a need and develop their products including advertisements and sales.

Nutrition/ Phys.Ed for Boys:  Mr. Evens/ Boys Gym.  Boys will have the opportunity to learn the science of exercise and strategies for a healthy diet

Nutrition/ Phys.Ed for Girls: Ms. Megdanis/ Girls Gym.  Girls will have the opportunity to learn the science of exercise and strategies for a healthy diet

World Culture through Cooking: Mon and Tues and Wed Ms. Whalen/Room 160. Students develop an understanding of various cultures from around the world through the study of people, their customs, geography and food they eat!!

Art Portfolio Development: Ms. Lamere/Room 141.  Students will have the opportunity in a small class environment to design and create art work reflective of their own and various artist’s styles and techniques. This portfolio may be used as part of the application process for a specialized art high school.

Foreign Language Club: Ms. Rodriquez/Room 232.  Students will participate in various activities related to the FL Club including producing Literary Magazines and organizing events such as our Multi-cultural evening

Drama/Actor’s Studio:  Audition Preparation: Mon/Tues and Thur Ms. Gelfand/Room 119 through the month of December for Eighth and Ninth Graders auditioning for specialized HS Drama programs: Selection of two monologs for entrance to high school drama programs. Rehearsing memorized monologs and getting feedback from teacher and students. January-June Acting and Performance: students will prepare short plays to be performed in the late spring

Checkpoint A Preparation for French and Spanish: Spanish w/ Ms. Chirol/ Room 229 French w/ Ms. Duke/Room 157) Students, in a small interactive group will get additional practice in preparation for the Checkpoint A assessment in spring 2008

Russian Language Enrichment: Ms. Blushtain/Mon/Tue/Wed/Thur Room 159: Students will have the opportunity to learn formal written and spoken Russian/; while lending their language skills to assist parents and teachers with oral and written translation

Studio for Chorus/Rehearsals: Mr. Goodman/Room 112 Mon/ Preparation for Specialized HS auditions/Tue Halsey Idol Competition/ Wed/Thur.  Jazz vocals

Studio for Band/ Rehearsals: Ms Cuevas/Room 113/ Mon/ Grade 6 Small group instrumental instruction with an emphasis on beginning musicians.  Tue/Wed  Ms. Cuevas/Room 113 For Grades 7, 8and 9/ Thursday-Jazz Band musicians will rehearse and perform music in the styles of Swing, Big Band, Latin Jazz, etc.  Participation is based on audition.
