Working Papers For Students

Any student who is at least 14 years of age and requests an application for working papers may come to the Main Office to see Ms. Goldkrantz for an application for working papers during A.M. homeroom only.

Peer Mediation Program

Dear Parents,

We have recently teamed up with the Commission on Human Rights to offer our students two wonderful opportunities. The first is a one day conflict resolution workshop. Two teams of staff will be visiting classrooms starting on Thursday, January 31^st for a double period and conducting the workshops. Workshops will offer students non-violent alternatives in conflict situations as well as different problem solving techniques.

The second program being offered is a peer mediation program. The program establishes dispute resolution in schools throughout the city. A team of trainers conducts a series of ten sessions in which selected students learn to mediate disputes involving fellow students. Peer mediation has many benefits for schools and students.

Resolves conflicts and helps prevent future disputes

Teaches life skills such as patience, persistence, active listening and problem solving and increases self esteem

Models an effective alternative to threats and violence

Promotes greater tolerance, empathy and understanding

Reduces tensions so that administrators, teachers and students can focus on education

The Commission’s approach blends the best peer mediation practices with an emphasis on individual dignity stemming from the Human Rights Law. Students are challenged to view each other as distinct individuals with singular needs and aspirations rather than stereotyped members of a group. The program is structured to meet school requirements, furnish materials, provide dynamic instruction and exercises, and guide student progress during initial mediations. Commission personnel also assist in selecting appropriate participants based upon leadership abilities, personality traits and enthusiasm for alternative dispute resolution. Participants will be selected towards the end of this year and the Peer Mediation program will begin in September 2008. The Conflict Resolution Program begins this month. More information will follow as it becomes available.
