A satisfactory attendance record is one of the requirements for promotion and graduation from the School. Additionally, it is a significant consideration in high school and college admissions. Because attendance procedures affect the safety and the academic success of our students, we expect them to be followed precisely.
Breakfast is available to all students at 8:10 a.m. every morning. Students are expected to be in their classrooms by 8:30 a.m. and will be marked late if they arrive after classes begin. A student who arrives after classes start must sign herself into the “Late Book” at the reception area. Students who are late to classes must present a late pass and will be subject to detention if they are late to school, or a class.
If a student is to leave school early, before her last class, she must have the written permission of her parent, or her parents must call the office the day of question. The parent must come to the school to get the student. This is a Chancellor’s Regulation and no exceptions are permitted.
Students are not excused from school during the week before or after a school holiday or vacation. Any student who is absent before or after vacation must make up the work she has missed on her own. Teachers may, at their discretion, offer tests to students who missed them during such times.
No one may excuse a student from class except the teacher of the class of school staff. Students out of class without a pass will be marked cutting.
Money and Valuables
Students should not bring large sums of money or other valuables (such as radios or disc players) to school. The School does NOT assume responsibility for valuables.
Uniforms
As the School, at its founding, chose to require a uniform, we ask that the following regulations be given full support by parents and students. These regulations have been held to a minimum and designed in the interest of safety, common sense, and the appearance of the school community as a whole.
Students must wear the school uniform (sweater, vest, skirt, pants, white collared shirt or T-shirt, sweatpants and sweatshirt for physical education classes). All uniform pieces must be purchased from the official uniform companies. Only head coverings worn for religious observance are permitted.
Student must wear sneakers in the building at all times. During the school day, students may not wear clogs, wooden soles, platform shoes, or any other footwear, which is potentially unsafe.
Students appearing in school out of uniform or in inappropriate clothing for school use will be asked to change to something suitable.
Students who dress in layers for warmth must use school colors – white or navy blue, depending on the color of the top. No apparel of other colors is acceptable.
Jewelry should not be worn in physical education classes, for reasons of safety. Since the School cannot provide storage for jewelry, wearing jewelry in school is to be discouraged as inconvenient and inappropriate. Excessive jewelry (i.e., any manner of visible body piercings, large hoop earrings, specialty belts, large rings, long/large metal rope chain key rings, etc.) are NOT permitted.
Students may not change into or out of the official school uniform at any time!
Students will be required to wear their physical education uniform during Physical Education classes. The uniform consists of the following:
Solid navy TYWLS sweatpants
Solid navy TYWLS t-shirt or sweatshirt
Sneakers and socks
Students are responsible for keeping track of their own possessions and for respecting the property of others. All clothing and other possessions should be marked with the student’s full name.
Teachers may stop any student who is in violation of the uniform policy and send that student to her Advisor, who will take appropriate action to make sure the infraction does not recur.
Telephones
Students may not use personal cell phones to contact homes. Students may use the office telephones only with the permission of a teacher or school staff. Parents are asked not to telephone the School Office with messages for students unless there is a real emergency.
CELL PHONES ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE SCHOOL AND WILL BE CONFISCATED ON SIGHT TO BE RETURNED ONLY TO A PARENT OR GUARDIAN.
Areas off limits
Students must disperse and leave the school area at dismissal for their own safety and the safety of others. For safety reasons, the corner of Guy R. Brewer Blvd. and 109th Avenue is off limits. Students found violating this policy will be disciplined.
Remember that on public buses, school trips, and so on, each student is a clearly identifiable representative of The Young Women’s Leadership School to the outside community. Students are expected to maintain standards of courteous and considerate behavior.
Eligible students receive METRO CARDS. There are circumstances under which lost cards cannot be replaced, so students are advised to handle these passes with care. A separate sheet is available explaining the metro card policy; however, generally there is at least a three-day waiting period for a lost metro card.
