5-501 with Ms. Hillman and Ms. Barnett

Welcome to Fifth Grade!

Welcome parents to a new school year.  We are looking forward to working with your children in the 2011/2012 school term.  Your child’s teachers this year are Mrs. Barnett and Ms. Hillman of Class 501.  Mrs. Barnett teaches Reading and Social Studies and Ms. Hillman is teaching Math and Writing.  Your child’s Science teacher is Ms. Fowler.  Your child also has Physical Education and Core Values once weekly with Mr. Gibson (gym) and Mrs. White (Core Values).

Please ask to see your child’s transport folder for our monthly notices.  Included will be our grade monthly newsletters.  This information will keep you abreast of what your child will be working on in all subject areas and will also notify you about upcoming events.  We also have a monthly school newsletter that includes a monthly calendar and other important information.  We will periodically send out progress reports during this school term that will advise you of how your child is doing in all subject areas, homework, behavior, etc.  You should also receive a password account for ARIS (Acuity) which will give you access to your child’s assessment scores.

We ask that you please check your child’s homework regularly to ensure that they are completing all assignments.  Homework is an extension of learning and all are essential to your child’s success.  Reading is the tunnel to success in all subject areas therefore it is important that you encourage your child to read each night at home as well as the reading assigned in class.  They are expected to keep a log and to complete all related work that enhances literacy skills.  Your child will also throughout the year be given handouts, workbook and individual generated assignments that will help them succeed in literacy, writing, math, social studies, science, etc.
