21st Century After-School Programs 2008 - 2009

Mondays and Wednesdays 3:00 - 5:00PM (Unless noted)


WordPlay! - Room 330 Mr. Toombs

Students will engage in the creative writing process to produce original publications
including a school newsletter.

 

Art Club- Room 310 Ms. Ms. Bonilla

Students explore various genres of the visual arts as they create both independent
original work and school projects.

 

Ballroom Dancing – Multi-Purpose Room Ms. Currier

Students will learn, practice and enjoy the fundamentals of popular Ballroom Dancing.

 

Cheerleaders – Room 420 Ms. Lalor, Ms. Spence

Students will learn the fundamentals of Cheerleading and group performance dancing.
The cheerleaders
will perform during the year at a variety of functions.

 

Drama/Musical Theater – Auditorium/Room 218 –
Ms. Clark, Mr. Andolora, Ms. Straubinger

Working with an actor/director/musical coach, students will produce
and perform musical productions for the school.

 

Songwriting/Percussion/Guitar – 222 “Mr. T” Mullen

Working with a professional recording artist, students will learn to
write and accompany songs on the guitar and percussion instruments.

 

Digital Photography – Library Ms. Rasmussen

Students will learn about digital cameras, photography, computer editing and
printing photos. The art of photography will be studied.

 

Chess in the Schools Club – Room 307 Ms. Broomfield/Mr. Tosi
(MONDAYS ONLY
)

This motivating program provides an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills,
build self-esteem, and learn discipline and social skills while learning the fun game of chess.

Students will compete in tournaments at the school and city level.

 

Yearbook – Room 418 Ms. Ain (Grade 8 students only)

Students will design and create the IS 230 senior yearbook.

Students will act as editors, photographers, journalists and learn computer based layout. 
Students develop literacy, leadership, cooperation and time-management skills.

 

Grade 6 ELA/Math Enrichment/Tutoring -
Room 413/414– Ms. Moonesar, Ms. Smith  

Students will receive targeted assistance in writing, reading and mathematics skills,
and assessment performance strategies

 

Lego Robotics Club – Room 418 Ms. Rencher (WEDNESDAYS ONLY)

Students participate in the city-wide Lego Robotics competition, designing and
constructing original motorized machines specific for tasks.
 

 

Soccer (Fall Term) 

Basketball (Spring Term)      GYM Ms. Battaglia/Mr. Uccellini

Students will learn the fundamentals of soccer and basketball and incorporate into
game play. Included will be inter-Academy basketball competitions, cheerleader
participation, and culminating student/faculty games.

 

Spanish Club - Room 221      Mr. Perez

Students will gain an exposure to written and spoken Spanish language through
a variety of engaging multi-disciplinary projects.

 

Mouse/Service Squad - Room 223 Mr. Pizzillo

Students will learn basic computer maintenance and repair, and assist with the
upkeep of computers
in the school. Additionally, the club will also perform
community service functions.

                                                                                                

 

RULES FOR THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM:

 

1.      You may only attend a club in with you are enrolled, you may not attend any other club.

 

2.      Attendance will be taken at every class. If you are absent, bring a note.

 

3.      If you miss 3 classes, we will assume that you no longer wish to attend, and your place will be given to another student!

 

4.      All clubs will meet in the Student Cafeteria at 2:58 PM for a snack. Students are responsible to keep their snack area clean, and throw away all trash.

 

5.      All students mandated to participate in the Project Success program (Level 1 and 2 students) must attend from 2:20 – 2:58 PM or will not be permitted to participate in an after school club.

 

6.      Students not participating in Project Success (Level 3 and 4 students) will attend Study Hall in the auditorium from 2:20 – 2:58 PM. Study Hall is a quiet place to engage in independent reading or homework. It is not a place to talk with friends.

 

7.      Participating in the After School program is a privilege. You must respect all teachers and other students and behave in accordance with the policies set forth in the student agenda and Chancellor’s Disciplinary Code or you will be expelled from the program.
