Chess in the Schools
This motivating program provides an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills, build self-esteem, and learn discipline and social skills while learning the fun game of chess. Students will compete in tournaments at the school and city level.
Dance (Provided by The Leadership Program)
Students will learn, practice and enjoy the fundamentals of various forms of modern dance.
Digital Photography (Provided by Urban Arts)
Students will learn about digital cameras, photography, computer editing and printing photos. The art of photography will be studied.
Drama/Musical Theater (Provided by Periwinkle Theater)
Working with an actor/director/musical coach, students will produce and perform musical skits, scenes and productions for the school.
Young Historians
Students will research and create projects on a variety of topics including pop culture, New York history, the war on terror, cartography, exploration of the world, ancient cultures and living history.
Intramural Sports Club
Students will learn the fundamentals of soccer and basketball and incorporate into game play. Included will be inter-Academy basketball competitions, and culminating student/faculty games.
Lego Robotics /Tabula Digita –
Students participate in the city-wide Lego Robotics competition, designing and constructing original motorized machines specific for tasks. Tabula Digita is a fun and interactive computer based learning tool supporting mathematics instruction.
Mural Making (Provided by Urban Arts)
Students will design and create original mural art in this exciting school beautification activity.
Spanish Club – (Grade 6 students receive priority)
Students will gain an exposure to written and spoken Spanish language through a variety of engaging multi-disciplinary projects.
Vocal Music (Provided by The Leadership Program)Students will learn warm ups, breathing technique and musical expression as they develop their singing ability throughout the year. We will rehearse and perform songs from theater, movies and pop culture.
Yearbook (Grade 8 students only)
Students will design and create the IS 230 senior yearbook. Students will act as editors, photographers, journalists and learn computer based layout. Students develop literacy, leadership, cooperation and time-management skills.
Tuesday and Thursday 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Fridays 2:20 PM to 4:30 PM
(Students MUST attend all 3 days)
Champions Club - Sports and Arts Foundation
The Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation operates after-school programs that provide a varying seasonal mix of sports, arts, and educational activities.Activities include academic tutoring, acting, art, ballet, character building, chess, computers,conflict resolution, dance, double Dutch, fencing, football, field hockey, field trips, golf, gospel music, gymnastics, handball, ice skating, judo, karate, lacrosse, math, music, performing arts, reading, rowing, sculpture, soccer, swimming, technology, tennis, track and field, training in values, video arts, weightlifting, and writing.
RULES FOR THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM:
1. You may only attend a club in with you are enrolled, you may not attend any other club.
2. Attendance will be taken at every class. If you are absent, bring a note.
3. If you miss 3 classes, we will assume that you no longer wish to attend, and your place will be given to another student!
4. All clubs will meet in the Student Cafeteria at 2:58 PM for a snack. Students are responsible to keep their snack area clean, and throw away all trash.
5. All students mandated to participate in the Project Success program (Level 1 and 2 students) must attend from 2:20 – 2:58 PM or will not be permitted to participate in an after school club.
6. Students not participating in Project Success (Level 3 and 4 students) will attend Study Hall in the auditorium from 2:20 – 2:58 PM. Study Hall is a quiet place to engage in independent reading or homework. It is not a place to talk with friends.
7. Participating in the After School program is a privilege. You must respect all teachers and other students and behave in accordance with the policies set forth in the student agenda and Chancellor’s Disciplinary Code or you will be expelled from the program.
