Mathematics at PS 234,Queens
The administration, teachers, and students of PS 234, Queens regard mathematics not only as a core curriculum subject, but also as an essential tool for everyday functioning.
The implementation of the University of Chicago’s research-based program, Everyday Mathematics, is a tremendous aid in the fulfillment of PS 234’s mathematics goals. That is, the acquisition of mathematics content knowledge and skills, and appreciation for mathematics.
Each Everyday Mathematics lesson consists of hands-on activities and oral and written communication so that students experience and interpret mathematics. Moreover, it engages students in frequent practice of basic skills through journal exercises, routines, and mathematics games.
In addition to Everyday Mathematics materials, all students at PS 234 hold and contribute to a Math Pod. This is a folder or notebook in which students express, in written form, their thoughts on mathematical topics. This allows for the integration of mathematics and literacy, thus the development of language and thinking skills.
One of the most meaningful ways that all students practice mathematics is through the implementation of morning routines. Each morning, students partake in tasks such as calendar, attendance, and weather tracking. The main purpose of these activities is for students to experience uses of mathematics in everyday life.
At PS 234 third, fourth, and fifth grade classes work diligently to exhibit proficiency at or above their grade level for the New York State Standardized Examinations. Everyday Mathematics is supplemented with various materials that support mathematics content and skills acquisition.
Mathematics intervention services are available for students who need academic support. Intervention services groups consist of a small number of students for whom specific goals are set. Moreover, instruction is tailored to the learning styles of the students.
Communication with parents/guardians is very important at PS 234, Queens. Parents/Guardians are informed about their children’s progress in mathematics through letters that are sent home periodically. In addition, parent workshops on mathematics topics are held by the parent coordinator and/or math coach.
The combination of striving for academic success in mathematics, along with realizing its value, will serves everyone at PS 234, Queens.
