SPECIAL PROGRAMS

 

Soar to Success is an after school program for Grades 3, 4 and 5 that provides ELA and Math test preparation.

The ESL After School Program for Grades 1 and 2 provides NYSESLAT test preparation.

Through Urban Voices of the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Basia Revi, a visiting artist, works with 4th and 5th grade classes throughout the year teaching students how to use their voices while studying various genres of choral music.

Dimitar Lukanov is a consultant visual artist working with Kindergarten and 1st grade classes doing sculpture and painting murals.

Sarah Yuster is a visiting artist acquired through a Council on the Arts and Humanities of Staten Island’s ABC grant. Ms. Yuster is working with 2nd grade classes on our Immigration Nation project which combines visual art and writing.

United Activities Unlimited conducts an after school program providing homework help as well as enrichment activities for grades 1-5 Monday through Friday.

The CookShop Program provides K-2 classes with a nutrition education curriculum designed to increase elementary school children’s consumption of whole and minimally processed plant foods through hands-on exploration and cooking activities in the classroom. The program is funded by the USDA’s Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program.

Adult Cookshop meets once a month. The program is aligned with the student CookShop and includes 20 participants led by the Parent Coordinator. Families are introduced to various foods and recipes.

An Adult ESL program sponsored by the Jewish Community Center meets twice a week.

New York Cares sponsors the following Saturday programs for students on a monthly basis: Art Explorers, Sports Explorers and Snacktivities.

Second grade classes participate in the Swim for Life program. Once a week, students are bused to the YMCA where they are taught to swim along with their classroom teachers by certified aquatics teachers. The program focuses on knowledge, safety and skills. Students learn different swim techniques, including paddling, treading and floating. Water games are used to reinforce skills. Safety and rescue techniques are also taught.

The My Own Book Program provides field trips for our third-grade classes to Barnes & Noble bookstores where each child is given a $50 allowance to purchase their very own books in an effort to  support child literacy and foster a love of reading among children, many of whom have never owned a book they could call their own.

Our Book of the Month program provides each staff member with a picture book to read aloud and to develop lesson plans derived from the book and its themes.

Intramural Basketball for both girls and boys is sponsored by the Teddy Atlas Foundation.

The Art Club consists of 15 students who meet weekly with our visual arts teacher to create special projects and works of art.

The Journalism Club consists of 5th Grade students who meet weekly with one of the 5th Grade teachers to create and develop writing pieces for various essay contests.
