Dear Parents,

As November began, so did our second marking period. Students can get a fresh start and another opportunity to receive a perfect homework/excellent effort certificate. During the first marking period more than half of our student body were award recipients. It is my hope that all middle school students receive a homework/effort award during the second marking period. The student daily agenda is a wonderful tool to help achieve this goal.

Our Middle School Students of the Month for September 2009 are Magda Hamza, Michael Cloppse, Maya Obadiariu, Jeremy Ramirez, Precious Kwakye and Samson MacDermot. Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Our Extended Day Instructional Program is scheduled to begin on Thursday, November 5th. Students will meet with teachers on every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:20 until 3:10 pm until January 7th. Students invited to the program have been notified. If your child has been invited, please return the tear off at the bottom of your invitation letter.

We have already started preparation for the standardized assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Study Skills had been built into your child’s program on Friday of each week. Students will work on their portfolio checklists in mathematics. Students should be reading their independent reading books at home and making 2 one page reading responses per week. Students should read at least 5 independent reading books during the second marking period. Students should also do 2 one page writing responses in their writer’s notebook per week.

The Middle School student government will begin our annual Borough president Thanksgiving Turkey food drive. Please send in cans and non perishable items to your child’s official class teacher throughout the month of November.

In our continuing efforts to provide you with information, we have added our monthly postcards to the school website. We have also included the math Portfolio checklists for grades 6, 7 and 8. The checklists can serve as a guide in helping you work with your child to prepare for upcoming standardized assessments. During the month of November you will also find project rubrics and guidelines to help you better assist your child in preparing for project due dates.

It was my pleasure to spend time away from the classroom with the children during our Middle School Halloween Dance. I would especially like to thank our PTA for creating the spectatcular Haunted House. The children truly enjoyed themselves. Our movie trip also proved to be a wonderful opportunity for your children to socialize, while enjoying a timeless piece of children’s literature come to life. This month we will begin to plan our annual Lip Sync contest and Bowling trip. More information will be forthcoming.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at (718) 815-0186 extension 217 or BSouffrin@schools.nyc.gov.

 Sincerely,

Ms. BettyAnn Souffrin
