New York State regulations require students to take and pass seven semesters of Physical Education and one semester of health education.
The 1996 report of the United States Surgeon General informs us without question that regular physical activity improves health and reduces the risk of developing or dying from some of the leading causes of illness and death in the United States.
Physical fitness and wellness are instrumental to academic success and are an integral part of a productive society.
Physical Education is a vital aspect of the total education experience that stimulates the intellectual, physical, emotional and social growth of young people. The total education experience is one that provides the opportunity for youngsters to become well rounded, responsible and healthy adults. The physical education program gives students a solid foundation in fitness activities, as well as life and social skills, so as to become productive members in society.
The Physical Education program at Port Richmond High School recognizes the wide range of abilities and interests of students and seeks to provide a program that offers choice and flexibility while maintaining optimum standards and requirements to allow for students to reach their fullest potential. Our program addresses the necessity for wellness training in order to accomplish lifetime goals. Through a varied program that addresses individual interests and abilities, our program develops basic competencies in several activities and leads to proficiency for a lifetime of participation in physical activity and wellness.
Freshmen participate in survey classes that introduce students to a variety of sports and activities, including soccer, softball, football, tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, aerobics, team handball, floor hockey and fitness.
Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors participate in selective classes in which students choose to participate in sports and activities of their choice. Selective classes include step aerobics, basketball, fitness and weight training, golf, jog/run, lacrosse, social dance, tennis and volleyball.
Health Education provides students with unique opportunities to make informed decisions and attain an optional quality of life and well being.
Our comprehensive health class is a multidisciplinary course that focuses on interactions among physical, emotional, mental and social factors, beliefs, cultures, the environment and behaviors of individuals, families and the community around them. Our health education program enables students to develop, maintain, and promote healthy lifestyle choices and address the continuum from health promotion to risk reduction to the prevention and management of health problems.
The Port Richmond PSAL Athletic Program, although considered an extra curricular activity, is an outgrowth of the Health and Physical Educational Program. Our athletic program encourages all student-athletes to become as well rounded as possible and, therefore, our sports program is geared towards providing for their physical, intellectual, emotional and social growth and development. The eligibility standards require all student-athletes to regularly attend school and to maintain strict academic performance and high disciplinary standards.
