HOME OF THE RAIDERS
The Mayor’s office, along with Chancellor Farina, has initiated a new program to expand the work of community schools in New York City. A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities. Community schools offer a personalized curriculum that emphasizes real-world learning and community problem-solving. Schools become centers of the community and are open to everyone – all day, every day, evenings and weekends. This has always been my vision for how our school can serve both our students as well as the communities our students live in.
I am excited to share with members of the Raider Family that we are presently completing the application that I hope will lead us to becoming a community school. Our smaller learning community structure, as well as our programs of study and connections to our community should make us an ideal candidate for this initiative. Our students and members of our school community will benefit greatly from the additional services and resources that are available through this program. Attendance improvement and student achievement are two major points of emphasis of the community school model.
I will be welcoming parents to school on Wednesday evening July 23, 2014 beginning at 7 pm to explain and discuss this exciting and important initiative. I encourage parents to join me for this short, but important meeting.
I hope that you are enjoying a wonderful summer filled with relaxation and family time. Please continue to encourage your child to spend time reading this summer and serving the community.
Best wishes for a great summer,
Timothy M. Gannon
