RAIDER READERS SUMMER PROGRAM
(FOR INCOMING 9TH GRADE in 2013 – 2014)
The English, ESL and Library Department welcomes you to Port Richmond High School. We hope your high school experience will broaden your knowledge and enrich your life. During the next four years, you will have an English course every term. In those classes, you will study many of the most famous classic and contemporary works of literature. These books will help you understand our world and increase your ability to express yourself in written and spoken language. Our Raider Readers Summer Program will get you started.
Your first assignments are:
- Keep a journal of at least 15 new vocabulary words from each of the books. Look up their definitions. Write the page number and the sentence in which you find the new word. To hear how the new words are pronounced, go to www.dictionary.com. Your teacher will collect the lists in September.
- Keep a journal of your thoughts and reactions after each section your read. It is an excellent way to prepare to discuss and write about your books. Your teachers give you a summer reading assessment as your first high school English assignment in the fall.
The books on this list are readily available in the public library or from local booksellers. They will also be available for purchase during Freshman Orientation Night on June 11, 2013. This list is also available on the school website at:
http://schools.nyc.gov/SchoolPortals/31/R445.
The English Teachers and I look forward to greeting you in September. Enjoy your first summer as a Raider Reader!
