ESL (English as a Second Language)

Title 111 ESL After School Program:
P.S. 274, has a Title 111 ESL After School Program for beginners and intermediate ELLs in grades 3rd-5th. Three highly qualified Bil./ESL teachers provide this supplemental
instructional program in alignment with NYC/NYS  standards in  all language and content areas.  Our main goal is to improve language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing with emphasis on the development of academic language. ESL researched based materials are carefully selected to ensure high quality and interest. Our program runs from October through March.

    ELL  Institute:
Our assistant principal, Mrs.Karen Lee Minogue and our  Bilingual/ESL coordinator attend, once a month, The ELL Literacy Leadership Institute of Principals and Assistant Principals.  At these sessions, experts from across the literacy education landscape help participants develop plans to meet the literacy needs of ELLs using research and school-based data. The institute specifically addresses literacy models, program improvement, evaluation and testing, and federal and state education policy.  Four of our Bil./ESL teachers attend the Saturday ELL Literacy Institute for Teachers where the same information is shared with them. Both groups plan turn key PDs for the entire staff.
