Science

P.S. 274’s Science Program, led by Ms. Jane Im and Ms. Rosa Quiles, services all students in grades PreK through 5 with the overarching goal of cultivating a lifelong love of science within each of our students. Each week, our children are engaged in labs and/or activities which will ultimately strengthen their critical thinking abilities and allow them to master invaluable science skills that they will utilize in other subject areas. As they experiment in their cooperative groups, our students also practice the art of communicating effectively with others and working as a part of a team of learners.

Our science program follows the most recent edition of the New York City Science Standards which details what students should be learning in science at every grade level. In light of the upcoming 4th grade State Science Assessment, we are also working assiduously with our fourth grade students and their teachers to ensure their preparedness for the exam.

It is our firm belief that students should be active learners in their education, especially in the area of science. Therefore, we will strive to immerse them in continued hands-on science activities and interactive experiments that allow our children to learn through their own powers of questioning and observation.

    NEW SCIENCE LAB

Thanks to Ms. Pat Levenson, who wrote a grant on our school’s behalf, P.S. 274 has been awarded $200,000 that will help build a brand new science laboratory! We will be renovating the current science room and furnishing the lab with materials, tools, and audiovisual equipment. Construction is set to begin this summer and will hopefully be completed within the next year. The science teachers and the students are excited to start experimenting in the new lab room as soon as it is finished and our most heartfelt thanks go out to Ms. Levenson for her dedication towards our science program!

    SCIENCE FAIR
Now is the chance for our students to show off their science skills! Any student in grades K-5 is invited to participate and demonstrate their skills of experimentation. Participants in the school-wide science fair will choose a research question within any science topic (i.e. “Which seed will grow the fastest?”) and conduct their own experiments by using the scientific method. Afterwards. students are to display their results and findings for the science fair judges.

Medals will be awarded to first place, second place, and third place winners from every grade level based on (1) use of the scientific method, (2) clarity of the results, and (3) overall appearance. Grades K, 1, and 2 will be doing CLASS experiments, while students in grades 3 through 5 will be working on independent experiments (or with a partner).

Our students work hard on their projects and display them proudly in the school lobby and lunchroom. All parents and teachers are encouraged to come and appreciate our children’s finished results!
