Social Studies

On Thursday, February 28, 2008, the Social Studies Cluster teachers staged a production for African American History Month. The play was written and directed by both Ms. A. Peralta and Ms. Bonfanti and was performed for Grades 3-5. The play dealt with important events of African American History, through the lives of slaves, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. The classes that performed were from 4-3 (Mr. Cortes), 5-2 (Ms. Castellone), 5-3 (Ms. Ramlal), and the understudies were from Class 4-4 (Ms. Sarjeant). The Chorus was from Classes 4-2 (Ms. Lorentz) and 5-6 (Ms. De Lustro). We have received a lot of positive feedback from both faculty and students who were touched by this performance. We treated the cast to a pizza party the following week for a wonderful performance. The students’ rehearsals really paid off. We hope to present another Social Studies themed play next school year, hopefully including the younger grades in the audience as well.

The Social Studies Cluster program involves enrichment of the Social Studies curriculum through all Grades Pre K to 5th grades. The lessons are aligned with the NYS standards and core curriculum. The lessons & activities include the social studies skills of Geography, Sequence & Chronology, Research & Writing skills, Comprehension skills, Technology, Presentation skills, and Organizing information. Also, both Ms. Bonfanti and Ms. Peralta communicate with the classroom teachers as to what topics the students are or should be learning and any ways to support them.
