Social Studies

 


    Instruction in the Social Studies content area involves all Grades Pre K to 5th grade students. The lessons are aligned with the NYS standards and core curriculum. The lessons & activities include the social studies skills of Geography, Sequence & Chronology, Research & Writing skills, Comprehension skills, Technology, Presentation skills, and Organizing information.

    These are some of the content being covered in the Social Studies program.

    Pre-K
    & Kindergarten: Ways we can help (at home, school, community), How families are alike and different, Different community workers, Neighborhood maps

    1st: Community Workers, Types of communities (City, Farm, Town), Different types of Transportation (air, land, water), map skills, changes over time

    2nd: Making various maps to show where they live (in a Neighborhood, Town, State, Country, Continent), Landforms (Land and Water), How people depend on their environment, Pollution (Land, Water, Air)

    3rd: Exploring the culture and ancient civilization of Egypt, Africa and then China.

    4th: Slavery, Civil War, Map Skills, Helping to focus on the writing skills and Social Studies content

    5th: States and regions of the U.S., Exploration of the Americas by European countries, Early Colonization and government forms, Westward expansion, Canada
