Intermediate School 349, the School of Math, Science and Technology, is a restructured school. We share a buildingwith I.S. 347 at 35 Starr Street. The school is divided into two academies: Starr and Troutman, which offer similar programs. The academies are housed mainly on the third and fourth floors. Both schools, I.S. 349 and I.S.347, share the library, cafeteria, school yard, gymnasium, and auditorium. I.S.349 has its own organization, entrance, and exit.
The school effectively serves 500 students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades including General Education, Special Education, and English Language Learners. The ethnic make-up of the school is approximately 88% Hispanic, 11% African American and 1% other.
In addition to the standard core curriculum of Language Arts, Mathematics, SocialStudies and Science, the school offers a rich curriculum, which includes physical and health education, art, chorus, dance, drama, technology, andSpanish as a foreign language. Students who are in need of extra help receive support through our Academic Intervention Services, which may be offered during the school day and/or through the After School/Saturday programs. For students who are not yet proficient in English we offer an excellent Bilingual Education Program with a strong ESL component.
Additionally, high achieving students are prepared for the New York Regents Examinations in Integrated Algebra and Spanish. Interested students can also participate in the MOUSE Squad and Dance/Drama Programs.
We have a strong partnership with New York City College of Technology where students participate in the New York State STEP Program.
Parent/School Support
We have a strong parent volunteer program. ESL, computer, dance, fitness, parenting and literacy classes are provided for parents through the Parent Academy. Parent meetings are held monthly. Puerto Rican Heritage, Black Historyand Multicultural programs are presented at appropriate times during the year.
