"Medusa," Jessica Astudillo, Ninth Grade, Townsend Harris High School

A deep abyss of a black pool
the mesmerizing gaze of the Gorgon;
A fearsome female with a deadly stare.
One of the three sisters turned by her own ambition.
On her head rests,
Not smooth strands of hair,
But rather vile cunning snakes
To adorn her hideous face.
Such an awful sight!
Turns mortal men into stone
With just one look,
A weapon deadlier than any sword.
Her head now lies on Athena’s shield,
Beheaded by the great hero Hercules,
She walks no more.
