I am fortunate enough to have been taught by many great teachers, I remember some wonderful professionals from Jamaica High School. They included, Daniel Mahoney, Dennis Young, Kurt Paul and Robert Consigli. However, if I must choose one teacher it would be from my elementary (PS 201Q) school. Miss Applewaite was a teacher that could inspire her students, full of warmth but tough when necessary. At that time, NYC used tracking for students and I was in the “lower” classes.
It was also a turbulent time at home, especially for an older brother because my mother was remarrying a few years after the death of my father. Miss Applewaite was able to get the best out of me and sent me on my way to do well for the rest of my academic life. Every once in awhile I still think about that year and my good fortune to have such a wonderful educator (and person) for a teacher.
