Lee Powell was the English teacher, Chorus teacher, Mentor and at times loving tormentor at Satellite East JHS. Ms. Powell encouraged an intelligent group of inner city youth to envision themselves being successful and high achievers. Ms. Powell took us to Lincoln Center to learn about the "3 Bs" when Zubin Mehta was the conductor. We also saw Macbeth with academy award winning actor F. Murray Abraham and great Opera. This exposure was exciting and life changing to a young Caribbean girl who'd recently immigrated to the US. Ms. Powell took the time to care about her students. She would intertwine the importance of eating properly and dressing appropriately into her lessons as she prepared us for the LaGuardia auditions and assisted us in chartering a Future Business Leaders of America chapter (FBLA). She stayed late, encouraged us, plodded and kneaded our egos and intellect, and even scared us into success. So I salute this woman whose actions have impacted many Satellite graduates in ways she may never know. Singing: “Don't you know that you are what you eat, from your head to your feat, every burger and shake is a habit that you should shake..."
