I am a NYC schoolteacher and I have had several teachers who have been powerful influences in my life.
When I was in fourth grade at P.S. 153 in the Bronx, my teacher, Mrs. Marcus, encouraged me in every possible way. I idolized her. She especially influenced me in the way I look at art.
Then there was Mrs. Braun, my fifth grade Social Studies teacher at I.S. 180. She inspired in me a lifelong love of history.
In tenth grade, I had Mr. Feinberg, the most powerful influence of all. If not for him, I don't believe I would have gone on to higher education. He believed in me and made me understand that I was a good writer. No one had encouraged me in quite the same way he did, and at such a critical time. He corresponded with me all through college.
I would not be the person I am today without having had them in my life. They are all my idols.
