Research and Prepare

Attend an in-person information session

From September through May, representatives from the Office of Teacher Recruitment & Quality visit campuses both in New York City and nationally to share information and meet interested candidates.  Although not required, these events are excellent opportunities for you to learn more about becoming a New York City teacher.  Generally, national visits are limited to states with large teacher markets or partnership universities.  Click here for a list of our upcoming in-person information sessions.

Attend an online information session

We strongly encourage you to register for an online information session.  These sessions, which are hosted by our recruiters, offer in-depth information on the application and hiring process and are followed by opportunities for you to ask any other questions you may have.  They are offered throughout our recruitment season.

Confirm your eligibility to teach in New York City

In order to work in New York City public schools, all teachers must have valid certification from the New York State Education Department. This certification requirement may be met in multiple ways, including through reciprocity for certified teachers from out-of-state. Please review the certification section of our website carefully to make sure that you have met these requirements (or are on track to meet them by the end of the summer before the school year for which you are applying).  If you still need assistance, the Division of Human Resources regularly conducts "The Road to Certification Workshop" to explain the requirements for state certification.  Pre-registration is required for all workshops by downloading the registration form.

If you are interested in teaching in New York City but do not hold any certification, please click here to learn more about alternative certification routes.
