Other Fellowships and Scholarships
The following programs are sponsored by the New York City Department of Education but are not administered by the Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality. These programs offer scholarships for degrees which lead to teacher certification in exchange for a service commitment to the NYC public schools.
The NYC Partnership for Teacher Excellence
The NYC Partnership for Teacher Excellence brings together The City University of New York (CUNY), New York University (NYU) (including the Steinhardt School of Education and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences), and the New York City Department of Education to develop and implement an innovative new model for the preparation and ongoing development of aspiring teachers to prepare them for a successful career. The Partnership addresses one of the current challenges facing public education in New York City, the need to dramatically improve the recruitment and retention of high-quality teachers, and is developing a solution that will serve as a model for urban public school teacher education across the country.
Teacher Academy (part of the Partnership for Teacher Excellence)
CUNY has launched an undergraduate Teacher Academy to train math and science majors to be secondary school teachers. All Teacher Academy students receive a full four-year scholarship and stipends for work in public schools and upon graduation will commit to teach for at least two years in a high-needs New York City school.
New York University Master’s Candidates (part of the Partnership for Teacher Excellence)
New York University accepts master degree candidates in shortage areas (e.g. math, science, and Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages) who have accepted scholarships committing them to teaching in a high-need school for two years.
Math for America Fellowship Program
The Math for America Fellowship Program is a five-year program that trains mathematically-talented individuals to become secondary math teachers and supports them in the early years of their careers. Math for America fellows receive a stipend of $90,000 over five years, obtain a full tuition scholarship to a master's-level teacher preparation program, and receive on-going support and professional development. The Math for America Fellowship Program seeks recent college graduates and mid-career professionals who know and enjoy math, enjoy working with young people, possess excellent communication skills, and have a strong interest in a career in teaching.
Manhattanville Jumpstart Program
The Manhattanville Jumpstart Program is an intensive program that provides participants with the opportunity to begin teaching after completing half of their graduate coursework in just over five months. Classes begin at the end of February and participants are eligible to be in a classroom in September, receiving full pay and benefits.
St. John's Career Change Program
St. John's University offers a Master's Degree program that can qualify participants for a full-salaried teaching position within one year, even with part-time attendance.
