Housing Support Program
The New York City Department of Education recognizes the challenges of relocating to or living in the New York City metropolitan area. The Housing Support Program provides nearly $15,000 in financial support for certified, full-time teachers with two or more years teaching experience in math, science, special education, or bilingual education. There are 100 Housing Support Program slots available annually.
All applicants must pass a rigorous selection process and those accepted into the program will receive housing support of approximately $15,000 (taxable) over two years in return for a three-year commitment to teach in a high-need school. Selected participants receive $5,000 in the fall when they begin teaching and then $200 added to each of their semi-monthly paychecks for the first two years (for a total of $14,600).
All teachers in this program must teach in a high-need school as identified through the Teachers of Tomorrow list of schools. Because Housing Support Program recipients are automatically eligible for Teachers of Tomorrow awards, the total additional financial incentive for these teachers is over $28,000 paid out over four years.
To be eligible for the Housing Support Program, a teacher may not have been employed as a full-time teacher by the Department of Education during the past two years. You need not be relocating to New York to participate; current residents of NYC are eligible to apply to receive funding to help defray their housing expenses.
Participants in alternative certification programs are not eligible for the Housing Support Program.
