The New York City Department of Education’s Student Teaching Initiative is a collaborative effort between local colleges and universities as well as in-state and out-of-state schools of education. The Student Teaching Initiative is designed to provide currently enrolled students the opportunity to have a fulfilling urban experience as a student teacher, offering support and guidance through the final stages of the traditional teacher certification process.
Student teachers in New York City public schools will have the opportunity to be an active participant and gain practical hands-on experience in an urban environment through meaningful classroom activities, professional development workshops, and staff meetings. With the guidance of an experienced cooperating teacher, student teachers will improve the instructional strategies, assessment practices, and classroom management skills that result in successful outcomes for students.
The Office of Student Teaching has published a Student Teaching Handbook which includes information on student teaching for student teachers, cooperating teachers, and principals. The handbook also includes a frequently asked questions section. We strongly recommend reviewing this handbook if you plan to student teach in a New York City public school.
The New York City Student Teaching Initiative provides the following resources:
- The opportunity to work with a diverse student population and experienced staff.
- Student teacher placement opportunities at over 1,400 elementary, middle, and secondary schools.
- Guidance and support through the recruitment process.
