The New York City Department of Education’s Student Teaching Initiative is a collaborative effort between local colleges and universities as well as in-state and out-of-state schools of education. The Student Teaching Initiative is designed to provide currently enrolled students the opportunity to have a fulfilling urban experience as a student teacher, offering support and guidance through the final stages of the traditional teacher certification process.
Student teachers in New York City public schools will have the opportunity to be an active participant and gain practical hands-on experience in an urban environment through meaningful classroom activities, professional development workshops, and staff meetings. With the guidance of an experienced cooperating teacher, student teachers will improve the instructional strategies, assessment practices, and classroom management skills that result in successful outcomes for students.
The Student Teaching Initiative provides the following resources:
- The opportunity to work with a diverse student population and experienced staff.
- Student teacher placement opportunities at over 1,450 elementary, middle, and secondary schools.
- Guidance and support through the recruitment process.
- Networking events with principals and recruitment staff.
The Student Teaching Initiative requires all student teachers in NYC Public Schools to complete an online registration application prior to beginning their student teaching. The information provided will assist us in keeping you informed and up-to-date as you complete your required coursework.
The online application is under construction. Please check back for updates.
