In order to become a full time paraprofessional, one must first become a substitute paraprofessional.

In order to participate in these events, interested candidates must apply online and must be qualified for consideration by completing requirements below.
In order to be considered for a position, potential substitute paraprofessionals are required to take and pass the New York State Assistant Teacher’s Examination (ATAS) and apply for New York State Certification as an Assistant Teacher. Information regarding test dates, preparation and registration is available at
http://www.nystce.nesinc.com. Other pre-employment requirements for this position include the successful completion of the two required New York State workshops (Child Abuse Identification and Violence Prevention). Information about these requirements is available at

Once applications are reviewed, those selected for an interview will be invited to an information and assessment session. At these events, information is shared regarding employment opportunities, requirements, and expectations. Selected candidates will be interviewed and assessed in both written and oral communication skills in English. If the candidate successfully passes these two components, s/he will be required to take an online training program to be processed for the position as a substitute paraprofessional. An additional training date is scheduled and there is a training fee required. Full time employment as a paraprofessional may commence after a minimum of 25 days of employment as a substitute AND with a firm job offer from a principal with a budgeted vacancy.
