Non-NY State Certification
We actively welcome individuals who are certified / licensed in another state and are interested in teaching in New York City.  In most instances, NY State facilitates the transition to teaching in New York City by granting a Conditional Initial Certificate to qualified out-of-state individuals.

Please consult this list to determine if your out-of-state certificate is accepted by the New York State Education Department at this time.

The Conditional Initial Certificate is issued to individuals holding a teaching certificate from a state with reciprocity but who have not yet met the New York State testing and workshop requirements.  Click here for more information about interstate reciprocity.  The Conditional Initial Certificate is valid for up to two years while a teacher completes these additional requirements.

Please note that the level of certificate from each state varies.  Applicants granted an emergency or temporary credential from another state will not be eligible.  If you have completed a full education program in a state that is part of the reciprocity agreement, it is likely that you will be eligible to teach in New York City.  Once you are interviewed and selected for a position, our staff will assist you through the reciprocity process.
