Teacher Support
Within every one of our 1,450 schools, you will find a talented group of colleagues and school leaders with a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.  As a teacher in the New York City public school system, you will be provided with an array of professional support opportunities, including mentoring at your school during your first year of teaching.  While each school customizes its mentoring program, typically, an experienced teacher will work with you on a regular basis to observe your lessons, provide feedback and coaching, and help you improve your instructional practice.

In addition to mentors, most schools have math and literacy coaches who work with all teachers in these critical content areas.  Many schools also have Teacher Centers that provide additional staff support.  Professional development opportunities are provided at the school and citywide levels, leveraging the depth of expertise in a district of this scale.  You can get a sense of the range of these opportunities by viewing the current on-line catalog.

On-line resources are also available in every content area to help teachers design and deliver high-quality instruction.  For each content area, on-line tools include standards, curriculum resources, and assessments.  To view, go to the Department Of Education’s Academics Home page and click on the content area sublinks on the left-hand menu bar.

Teachers interested in exploring leadership roles in and out of the classroom can take advantage of professional development opportunities that prepare them for career advancement into school leadership teams, mentoring, coaching, and administration.

NYC educators also have access to state of the art assessment tools through the new ARIS data management system, which provides student and classroom level data on progress in key standards.
